A survey by CPNN

We list here 366 events in 22 European countries that were listed this year in Google during the week of September 21-28 under the key words “International Day of Peace”, “Journée Internationale de la Paix”, “Dia Internacional de Paz”, “Dia Internacional da Paz”, “Internationaler Tag des Friedens”and “Giornata internazionale della pace.”

In France, there were 70 events in 43 departments, almost half of all the departments in the country, and in Belgium there were events in 209 municipalities.

In order to save space, only one event is described in detail for each department in France, while internet links are provided for the others. The Belgium cities flying the peace flag are listed, but not described in detail. In other countries only one event is described in detail for each city, while internet links are provided for the others.

No doubt there were also many events listed on the Internet in the various national languages in Europe other than those for which we searched.

We walked the 2-kilometer “Path of Remembrance,” following in the footsteps of the Russian soldiers stationed at La Courtine who mutinied at the military camp during the summer of 1917. BREST (29)

NIMES (30) : Statement by Vincent Bouget, Mayor of Nimes. On the occasion of the International Day of Peace, I am very proud to see Nîmes committing to building a culture of peace. At a time when wars are proliferating across the globe and imperialism is resurging on every continent, we must share this commitment widely—this week and throughout the year. To this end, we are launching several municipal initiatives in support of the International Day of Peace. First, we have appointed a municipal councillor with a specific portfolio for Remembrance, Veterans’ Affairs, and the Culture of Peace. Another initiative is the City of Nîmes joining the “Mayors for Peace France” association; we will pass a formal resolution to this effect at next Monday’s city council meeting. We are also working to establish a town twinning arrangement with a city in the West Bank, with initial actions planned for next year. In this way, the City of Nîmes can embody a commitment to global peace—one that must be lived out daily and is inseparable from our commitments to social justice and the fight against climate change.

I was also glad to join fellow parliamentarians for Parliamentarians for Peace 2026, standing together for peace above our differences and for a culture of non-violence.

SHETLAND : Did you know that Monday 21st September 2026 was International Day of Peace? Well, we certainly did here in Fair Isle (where we are very grateful for the peaceful – if not busy – nature of our island). We marked International Day of Peace as part of work as a rights respecting school. It was over to some of our older pupils to lead us in our learning, who planned out the afternoon. They wanted to explore some videos, look at peace symbols and go on a nature “peace” walk to the plantation (where the Bird Observatory keep watch for rare birds) and that was exactly what we did. We found a lovely clip of Fair Isle folk in the past talking about how peaceful our island is, decorated a peace symbol and went on a two mile wander as well, pausing for some peaceful reflection along the way. We even met the rangers who had caught a grey wagtail too.

SWANSEA, WALES : Join us at Down By Here,
210 High Street, for a very special World Peace Day celebration. We will be celebrating the launch of Peaceweavers international peace anthology. ‘Peaceweavers’ weaves together a mixture of essays, interviews, quotations, poetry and artwork from contributors across the world, together wuth a Foreword by Rowan Williams. There will be readings, live music and more tbc! Sponsored by Culture Matters and The Seventh Quarry Press

TRURO : To mark this International Day of Peace, you’ll find the team from Churches Together on High Cross from 10:00 – 16:00 complete with a gazebo and leaflets, celebrating International Day of Peace.

VATICAN

VATICAN CITY : The Atrium of St Peter’s Basilica will host Sounds of Loss on 21 September, the United Nations International Day of Peace. The audio installation, conceived by German filmmaker Philip Gröning, seeks to draw attention to the human lives lost in wars through a series of irregular clicking and tapping sounds. The initiative is supported by the Holy See’s Dicastery for Culture and Education, the Dicastery for Communication and the Fabric of St Peter’s Basilica.
