{"id":8523,"date":"2017-01-04T02:48:51","date_gmt":"2017-01-04T07:48:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/?p=8523"},"modified":"2019-10-10T12:46:58","modified_gmt":"2019-10-10T16:46:58","slug":"civil-society-and-the-un-high-level-conference-on-nuclear-disarmament","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/?p=8523","title":{"rendered":"Civil Society and the UN High Level Conference on Nuclear Disarmament"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"float: left; width: 46%;\">\n<p>DISARMAMENT &#038; SECURITY .<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/us12.campaign-archive1.com\/?u=b24250dac623a8bc5da1b0664&#038;id=da0add6f3b\">December 2016 Newsletter<\/a> of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.unfoldzero.org\">UNFOLD ZERO<\/a><\/p>\n<p>On December 3, 2016, the UN General Assembly adopted ground-breaking <a href=\"http:\/\/www.unfoldzero.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/UNGA-Resolution-71_71-1.pdf\">Resolution 71\/71<\/a>, supported by over 140 countries, calling for the start of negotiations on an international treaty to prohibit and eliminate nuclear weapons, and affirming its earlier decision to hold a High Level Conference on Nuclear Disarmament no later than 2018 to review progress on such a treaty.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/nuclear.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/nuclear.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"602\" height=\"401\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8524\" srcset=\"https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/nuclear.png 602w, https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/nuclear-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 602px) 100vw, 602px\" \/><\/a><\/center><\/p>\n<p>The UN has previously held high level meetings on nuclear disarmament, but these were not much more than talk-shops.<\/p>\n<p>In contrast, the 2018 event will be the first time the UN General Assembly has held a high level conference on nuclear disarmament. Such an event carries with it the expectation of deliberations to reach an agreement or agreements on concrete nuclear disarmament measures.<\/p>\n<p>The 2018 UN Conference, and its preparatory process, provide a unique opportunity for civil society and like-minded governments to elevate the issue of nuclear disarmament globally and build political pressure on the nuclear-reliant States to agree to specific nuclear disarmament proposals at the conference.<\/p>\n<p>(Continued in right column)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"float: right; width: 46%;\">Question related to this article:<\/div>\n<div style=\"float: right; width: 46%;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"float: right; width: 46%;\">\n<p align=\"justify\">\n<p><em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/?p=5035\">Can we abolish all nuclear weapons?<\/a> <\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/?p=10832\">A UN High-Level Conference on Nuclear Disarmament: Distraction or progress?<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>(Continued from left column)<\/p>\n<p>Similar UN high level conferences on other difficult global issues &#8211; such as sustainable development, climate change and refugees &#8211; have had considerable success engaging all relevant States and civil society to achieve concrete results.<\/p>\n<p>The UN conference on nuclear disarmament could, for example, aim for:<\/p>\n<p>\t\u2022\tNon-nuclear States (and maybe others) to announce at the conference their ratification of the nuclear prohibition treaty which will most likely be negotiated by 2018 (see <a href=\"http:\/\/www.unfoldzero.org\/un-agrees-to-nuclear-prohibition-negotiations\/\">UN agrees to nuclear prohibition negotiations<\/a>);<\/p>\n<p>\t\u2022\tAgreement by the nuclear armed and allied States that their sole purpose for nuclear weapons is to deter other nuclear weapons and that they would never use nuclear weapons first;<\/p>\n<p>\t\u2022\tA decision to convene a conference for the establishment of a Middle East Zone free from nuclear weapons and other WMD;<\/p>\n<p>\t\u2022\tA framework agreement (or political declaration) to achieve the prohibition of any use of nuclear weapons and the phased elimination of nuclear weapons.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\nUNFOLD ZERO is organising a number of private meetings on the UN High Level Conference with governments, as well as open consultation meetings with non-governmental organisations in Geneva, London, New York, Vienna, Washington and other locations in early 2017.<\/p>\n<p>At these meetings we will discuss strategy and campaign activities to build success for the UN High Level Conference.<\/p>\n<p>For more information see <a href=\"http:\/\/www.unfoldzero.org\/un-to-hold-high-level-conference-on-nuclear-disarmament\/\">UN to hold High Level Conference on nuclear disarmament<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>DISARMAMENT &#038; SECURITY .
