HUMAN RIGHTS .<\/p>\n<p>An article from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/us\/thousands-march-washington-leaders-warn-voting-civil-rights-rollbacks-2026-08-28\/\">Reuters<\/a> (reproduced by permission)<\/p>\n<p>More than six decades after Martin Luther King Jr. stood on the steps \u200cof the Lincoln Memorial and declared his dream for a more just America, thousands gathered in Washington on Friday to warn that voting rights and other freedoms he fought and died for are once again under threat.<\/p>\n<p>Civil rights leaders invoked the same demands he made from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial two and a half generations ago: that the fight for equality remains unfinished.<\/p>\n<p>The event, called &#8220;March on Washington 2026: Defend the Vote,&#8221; drew several thousand people to the National Mall, including union members, students, members of Black Greek-letter organizations, and attendees of all ages who traveled from across the country.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/rally.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/rally.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"900\" height=\"504\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-39974\" srcset=\"https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/rally.jpg 900w, https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/rally-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/rally-768x430.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nPhoto from video accompanying the article<\/center><\/p>\n<p>The march comes after the Supreme Court\u00a0weakened\u00a0a key provision of the Voting Rights Act this year, setting off a string of redistricting battles across the South, with Republican-led statehouses moving quickly, in some cases within days, to\u00a0redraw congressional maps\u00a0in time for midterm elections in November.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We know in this fight we&#8217;re fighting powerful forces, but this is why we rally today,&#8221; said Marc Morial, president and CEO of the civil rights organization National Urban League. &#8220;This is why we seek to bring Americans together of goodwill from all races, from all sections of the country to push back as forcefully as we can.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>(Article continued in the right column)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"float: right; width: 46%;\">Questions related to this article:\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"float: right; width: 46%;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"float: right; width: 46%;\">\n<p align=\"justify\">\n<p><strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/?p=7795\">The struggle for human rights, is it gathering force in the USA?<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/?p=14298\">How can we be sure to get news about peace demonstrations?<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>(Article continued from the left column)<\/p>\n<p>The gathering was organized by Al Sharpton&#8217;s National Action Network and Martin Luther King III \u200cand Arndrea Waters King&#8217;s Drum Major Institute, alongside more than 90 community partner organizations, including the NAACP and National Urban League.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDefending the vote means defending the foundation of our democracy,\u201d said King III in a statement. \u201cSixty-three years after my father stood at the Lincoln Memorial, we are called to march again, not only in remembrance, but in action.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to the organizers, the march aims to &#8220;confront the systemic rollback of civil rights at this critical moment,&#8221; referring to President Donald Trump&#8217;s efforts to curb mail-in voting, weaken anti-discrimination\u00a0protections\u00a0across the federal government and\u00a0fundamentally shift\u00a0what civil rights are.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We stand on the same ground because the work is not finished,&#8221; Sharpton wrote in a letter to supporters. &#8220;The right to vote, the very foundation of our power, is being chipped away in statehouse after statehouse. When the vote is weakened, every other right grows fragile with it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The program began at 9 a.m. ET with confirmed speakers U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders, an independent from Vermont, Democratic Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Black unemployment is up, Black homeownership is down and Black political representation is under assault with Jim Crow-like tactics all throughout the South \u2014 challenging times,&#8221; Jeffries said, referring to the system of state and local laws that enforced racial segregation in the American South until the 1960s.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;  &#8211;  &#8211;  &#8211;  &#8211;  &#8211;<\/p>\n<p>If you wish to make a comment on this article, you may write to coordinator@cpnn-world.org with the title &#8220;Comment on (name of article)&#8221; and we will put your comment on line.
