Spanish Prime Minister Pedro S\u00e1nchez\u00a0honored <\/a> \u00a0Francesca Albanese, the\u00a0United Nations\u00a0special rapporteur on\u00a0Palestine, on Thursday, in a display of\u00a0solidarity\u00a0as she faces\u00a0sanctions\u00a0from the\u00a0United States\u00a0over her outspoken advocacy against Israel\u2019s\u00a0genocide\u00a0in\u00a0Gaza.<\/p>\n

Citing her work to document\u00a0human rights\u00a0violations over more than two years of conflict, S\u00e1nchez awarded Albanese the\u00a0Order of Civil Merit<\/a>,\u00a0a knighthood granted to Spanish and foreign citizens for extraordinary services benefiting the state or society.<\/p>\n

\u201cPublic responsibility… entails the moral obligation not to look the other way,\u201d S\u00e1nchez said in a\u00a0social media\u00a0post<\/a>. \u201cIt is an honor to award the Order of Civil Merit to a voice that upholds the conscience of the world: Francesca Albanese.\u201d<\/p>\n

Earlier this week, S\u00e1nchez\u00a0petitioned\u00a0<\/a> the European Commission to intervene to stop compliance with the Trump administration\u2019s efforts to punish Albanese, as well as members of the\u00a0International Criminal Court\u00a0who have brought arrest\u00a0warrants\u00a0<\/a> against Israeli Prime Minister\u00a0Benjamin Netanyahu\u00a0and former Defense Minister\u00a0Yoav Gallant.<\/p>\n

Albanese, an Italian legal scholar, has held the role of special rapporteur since 2022, a year before Israel launched a war in\u00a0Gaza\u00a0in response to a Hamas-led attack on October 7, 2023.\u00a0Human rights organizations\u00a0<\/a> and\u00a0UN experts\u00a0<\/a> have described Israel\u2019s assault as a genocide.<\/p>\n

In March 2024, Albanese\u00a0released\u00a0<\/a> the UN\u2019s first major public report, making the legal case that there are \u201creasonable grounds\u201d to believe a genocide was being committed, referring to a litany of statements by Israeli officials establishing intent to destroy the Palestinian population.<\/p>\n

In addition to documenting Israel\u2019s actions, she has\u00a0published\u00a0<\/a> research demonstrating the \u201ccomplicity\u201d of nations that supply weapons and other support to Israel in what she has called a \u201ccollective crime\u201d that they should also face responsibility for.<\/p>\n

According to official estimates, at least 72,000\u00a0Palestinians\u00a0have been\u00a0killed\u00a0<\/a> since October 2023, many of them women and\u00a0children, while independent analyses suggest the death toll is\u00a0much higher<\/a>, in part due to the near-total destruction of health and other public\u00a0infrastructure.<\/p>\n

Many of the buildings in\u00a0Gaza\u00a0have been destroyed by over two years of relentless bombings, leaving most of its 2.1 million people\u00a0displaced\u00a0<\/a> and living in tent cities.<\/p>\n

Albanese\u00a0told\u00a0<\/a> a Spanish broadcaster that the US and other nations attempting to punish her and other international authorities for speaking out against atrocities in Gaza were \u201clike an international mafia.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThey want to silence everyone who demands an end to genocide, an end to the crimes,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
