HUMAN RIGHTS .<\/p>\n<p>An article by Jon Queally from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/chicago-protest-trump\">Common Dreams<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Many thousands marched in solidarity through downtown Chicago over the weekend of September 6 to denounce the growing threat of President Donald Trump\u2019s authoritarianism, with the Midwest\u2019s largest city his latest target.<\/p>\n<p>(Editor&#8217;s note: In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2025\/09\/07\/nx-s1-5533191\/trump-chicago-threat-baltimore-new-orleans\">more recent news,<\/a> Trump was forced to back down from his threat to invade Chicago in the face of the united opposition in Chicago, including opposition by the mayor and by the governor of the State of Illinois.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Chicago-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Chicago-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"900\" height=\"599\" class=\"size-full wp-image-36843\" srcset=\"https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Chicago-1.jpg 900w, https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Chicago-1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Chicago-1-768x511.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><\/a> <\/center><\/p>\n<p>Organized by the Coalition Against the Trump Agenda and the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights, city residents demonstrated in droves on Saturday afternoon, walking down Michigan Avenue carrying signs that read: \u201cNational Guard Stay Out of Chicago!\u201c; \u201cICE Out of Chicago!\u201c; \u201cNo Trump! No Troops!\u201c; \u201cNo Nazis &#8211; No Kings\u201d; and \u201cRise Up! Fight Back!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At a rally ahead of the march, Reverend Ciera Bates-Chamberlain of Live Free Illinois, a member of the coalition behind the march, denounced Trump\u2019s threat to send a large-scale deportation force and National Guard troops to the city as well as the president\u2019s wider far-right agenda.<\/p>\n<p>(Article continued in the right column)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"float: right; width: 46%;\">Questions related to this article:\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"float: right; width: 46%;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"float: right; width: 46%;\">\n<p align=\"justify\">\n<p><strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/?p=7795\">The struggle for human rights, is it gathering force in the USA?<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>(Article continued from the left column)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTrump has spent billions on federal guards and the militarization of our community, pouring money into weapons and intimidation instead of investing in schools, hospitals, jobs, and housing,\u201d Bates-Chamberlain said,\u00a0according to\u00a0Chicago\u2019s\u00a0Channel 5\u00a0news. \u201cHe has stripped us of vital resources meant to help us live, only to use them to try to break our spirits.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Trump on Saturday threatened to show the people of Chicago \u201cwhy it\u2019s called the Department of War,\u201d a reference to the recent rebranding of the Department of Defense. The president shared a meme from the Vietnam War film \u201cApocalypse Now,\u201d with himself superimposed on the war-hungry Lieutenant Colonel, and wrote: \u201cI love the smell of deportations in the morning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Even for Trump, known for his repulsive comments and increasingly autocratic behavior, the open threat to make war on a US city\u2014despite later efforts to walk it back or efforts to gaslight people into thinking it didn\u2019t mean what it clearly meant\u2014was seen as a chilling escalation in rhetoric and intent.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe President of the United States is threatening to go to war with an American city,\u201d said Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker in response to the post. \u201cThis is not a joke.
