Representatives from faith groups\u00a0\u2013 including the Hindu, Bah\u00e1\u02bc\u00ed, Jewish, Sikh, Sufi, Alevi, Buddhist\u00a0and Christian\u00a0religions\u00a0\u2013 gathered\u00a0at Glenroy Community Hub in Victoria on 9 February to mark World Interfaith Harmony Week.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The\u00a0event was hosted by the Merri-Bek Interfaith Network, which includes Captain Steph Glover from\u00a0Merri-Bek\u00a0Salvation Army. Merri-Bek Corps members\u00a0also led the group in singing \u2018Make Me a Channel of Your Peace\u2019 to begin the event, accompanied by the corps\u2019 brass band.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Steph said the event was quite a moving one, especially for those who have recently had windows to their offices smashed or buildings graffitied in incidents alleged to be religiously motivated. She said many Palestinian\u00a0and Jewish\u00a0residents in the area had been\u00a0taking cover in fear of attacks. She said as a precautionary measure, the event, originally planned for an outdoor location,\u00a0had been moved to an indoor one.\u00a0<\/p>\n

She said reciting the Shared Act of Reflection and Commitment\u00a0\u2013 a declaration spoken at the beginning of each meeting \u2013\u00a0reminded them\u00a0of\u00a0the values they all shared.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cAs faith leaders, we wanted to be the ones to go out and set an example and say, \u2018Actually, we all might have slightly different beliefs, but what we do all agree on are these things\u2019,\u201d Steph said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Representatives from each faith tradition\u00a0present at the event\u00a0shared a message of peace\u00a0through song, dance, prayers\u00a0and spiritual readings.\u00a0Attendees exchanged olive branches as a symbol of peace across religions.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Steph described the Network as a \u201creally, really close-knit community\u201d which\u00a0met once every couple of months.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
