Excellencies, ladies and gentlemen,
\n\u00a0
\nWe come together today to sound the call for peace.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Here at the United Nations, peace is our raison d’\u00eatre, our guiding light, and our founding creed.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Yet peace is under threat.<\/p>\n

War is on the march.\u00a0<\/p>\n

From the Middle East, to Sudan, Ukraine, and beyond, we see bullets and bombs maim and kill; bodies piled high; populations traumatised; and buildings reduced to rubble. \u00a0<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the foundations of a peaceful world are fracturing.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Geo-political divisions are widening.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Inequalities are growing.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Disinformation is fanning the flames of hate.\u00a0<\/p>\n

New technologies are being weaponised with no guardrails.\u00a0<\/p>\n

And the climate crisis is fuelling instability: depleting resources, and forcing people from their homes.\u00a0<\/p>\n

International institutions must be better positioned to respond.\u00a0<\/p>\n

And we have a chance for change.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Later this month, at the Summit of the Future, we can begin the process of reform and revitalisation:\u00a0<\/p>\n

By adapting multilateral institutions to today\u2019s reality, instead of the reality of the Second World War;\u00a0<\/p>\n

By advancing a New Agenda for Peace;<\/p>\n

By revitalising the Sustainable Development Goals;\u00a0<\/p>\n

By protecting human rights; \u00a0<\/p>\n

By tackling the point where climate and security meet;<\/p>\n

By agreeing guardrails on new technologies in conflict;\u00a0<\/p>\n

By defending and advancing gender equality;\u00a0<\/p>\n

By combatting racism and discrimination;<\/p>\n

And by securing full and meaningful participation in civic life and peacebuilding \u2013particularly young people, women and girls, and other historically marginalised communities.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In short, we must \u201ccultivate a culture of peace.\u201d<\/p>\n

That is the theme of this year\u2019s International Day of Peace.\u00a0<\/p>\n

And it is a cause all us devotees of peace and justice must rally behind, this day and everyday \u2013 through the Summit of the Future and beyond.\u00a0<\/p>\n

That is the call we make today.\u00a0<\/p>\n

May it ring out around the world. \u00a0<\/p>\n

Before I sound the peace bell, please join me in a moment of silence to reflect on the meaning and necessity of peace \u2013 and the way in which each of us can nurture the conditions needed for a peaceful world to flourish.<\/p>\n
