The bombing resulted in immense devastation which killed and injured tens of thousands of people.<\/p>\n<p>The Secretary-General insisted that the threat of the use of nuclear weapons is not just \u201cconfined to history books\u201d but a \u201creal and present danger\u201d today \u2013 once again looming large \u201cin the daily rhetoric of international relations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>(Continued in right column)<\/p>\n<p>(Click <a href=\"https:\/\/french.cpnn-world.org\/?p=10613\">here for a version in French<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/spanish.cpnn-world.org?p=11284\">here for a version in Spanish<\/a.)\n\n<\/a><\/div>\n<div style=\"float: right; width: 46%;\">Question related to this article:<\/div>\n<div style=\"float: right; width: 46%;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"float: right; width: 46%;\">\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n<em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/?p=5035\">Can we abolish all nuclear weapons?<\/a> <\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>(Continued from left column)<\/p>\n<p><strong>The lessons of Hiroshima<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In a message delivered in the Japanese city by UN disarmament chief Izumi Nakamitsu, Mr. Guterres said the lessons of Hiroshima which encourage disarmament and peace have been \u201cpushed aside\u201d but he recognised the people of Hiroshima&#8217;s efforts to ensure nuclear weapons are never used again.<\/p>\n<p>He further insisted that the use of nuclear weapons is unacceptable and \u201ca nuclear war cannot be won &#8211; and must never be fought.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said this is a lesson that shows we need disarmament now.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The message for the future<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As the Hiroshima Peace Memorial ceremony continued, Mr. Guterres said that global mistrust and division have grown, but we must ensure not to \u201cpress our luck again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome are recklessly rattling the nuclear saber once more,\u201d he said. \u201cThe world must stand together to condemn this unacceptable behaviour.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Looking ahead to the Summit of the Future in New York next month, the Secretary-General said it is a \u201ccritical opportunity for governments to renew their commitment to multilateralism, sustainable development and peace, and adopt an actionable and forward-looking Pact for the Future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said that conflict prevention, disarmament and a nuclear weapons-free world need to be at the heart of these efforts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will never forget the lessons of 6 August 1945,\u201d he said. \u201cNo more Hiroshimas. No more Nagasakis.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Renewed determination <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday, UN disarmament chief, Ms. Nakamitsu echoed that message online.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement on X, she also renewed her determination \u201cto continue to work towards a world without nuclear weapons.
