An announcement from Peace in Ukraine<\/a><\/p>\n

We are calling for an international civil society gathering in Vienna, Austria on June 10\/11* <\/p>\n

The goal of the Peace Summit is to publish an Urgent Global Appeal, called the\u00a0Vienna Declaration for Peace, calling on political leaders to act in support of a ceasefire and\u00a0 negotiations in Ukraine.<\/p>\n

Inviting Organizations:\u00a0<\/strong>International Peace Bureau, CODEPINK, Assembly of the World\u00a0 Social Forum, Transform Europe, IPPNW (D,AT,CH) (tbc), Europe4Peace, WILPF\u00a0 International (tbc), International Fellowship of Reconciliation, Peace in Ukraine coalition<\/p>\n

Local Organizers and Supporters:\u00a0<\/strong>AbFaNG (Action Alliance for Peace, active Neutrality\u00a0 and Non-violence), Institute for Intercultural Research and Cooperation (IIRC), Austrian\u00a0 Center for Peace (ACP) in Stadtschlaining, Herbert C. Kelman Institute for Interactive\u00a0 Conflict Transformation, \u00d6GB \u2013 \u00d6sterreichischer Gewerkschaftsbund, WILPF Austria (tbc), Internationaler Vers\u00f6hnungsbund \u2013 \u00f6sterreichischer Zweig<\/p>\n

The summit will have different parts:<\/p>\n

A conference to discuss the controversial questions related to the Russian-Ukrainian war, to hear the voices of civil society representatives of the various NATO countries, as well as\u00a0 representatives from Russia and Ukraine who support the aims of the Peace Summit.\u00a0 Participants from the Global South will share the dramatic consequences this war has had\u00a0 for the people in their countries and emphasize how they can contribute to peace. The\u00a0 Conference will focus not only on critics and analysis, but also on creative solutions and\u00a0 ways to end the war and how to prepare negotiations. This is not only the task of states and\u00a0 diplomats but nowadays more and more also of global society.<\/p>\n

The conference will include a combination of lectures, working groups, expert groups, and\u00a0 dialogues.<\/p>\n

After the summit a march in Vienna to the various NATO-country embassies, as well as\u00a0 the embassies of Russia and Ukraine and international organizations located in Vienna will\u00a0 take place to meet with embassy representatives and deliver the Vienna Declaration for\u00a0 Peace from people around the world;<\/p>\n

*The 9th of June is the 180th Birthday of the Austrian Nobel Peace Prize laureate Bertha von Suttner, the first female Nobel Peace Prize laureate ever.<\/p>\n

The summit will also be supported by a send-off for delegations to visit the capitals of\u00a0 various European countries with the purpose of meeting with government officials and\u00a0 international organizations. Also further events for late 2023 will be developed.<\/p>\n

A call for peace\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

We condemn the illegal Russian invasion in Ukraine. The war has caused death and injuries\u00a0 of civilians and soldiers and created untold suffering for the Ukrainian people, destroying the\u00a0 country\u2019s environment and infrastructure, causing rising food and energy prices around the\u00a0 world, exacerbating poverty and hunger \u2013 especially in the global South \u2013 and threatening the\u00a0 entire world with a nuclear war.<\/p>\n

It is time for the weapons to fall silent and for diplomacy to begin to resolve the conflict. We\u00a0 must counter the logic of war with the logic of peace.<\/p>\n

Let us gather to discuss the state and the wider context of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, the\u00a0 positions of our various governments, the efforts, obstacles, and opportunities of the various\u00a0 peace movements and most importantly, how we can work more effectively to promote a\u00a0 ceasefire and negotiations, and peaceful solutions as the alternative to war.<\/p>\n

Peace is not only the task of states and diplomats but nowadays more and more also of the\u00a0 global civil society. What is urgently needed now is a global movement demanding that all\u00a0 parties stop fighting and start talking. The international support garnered by the International\u00a0 Peace Bureau\u2019s Christmas ceasefire appeal, the appeals at the UN General Assembly and by\u00a0 many governments, even comments from some political leaders of Russia and Ukraine show\u00a0 that a window of opportunity may be opening.<\/p>\n

Why Vienna?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Austria is a neutral country. It is a \u201cUN City\u201d and the home to the Secretariat of the OSCE (the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe), which had been monitoring the\u00a0 situation in the Donbas since the signing of the Minsk II agreement.<\/p>\n

Join the Peace Summit!\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

It is the responsibility of peace movements all around the world and of all peace-loving\u00a0 peoples to strengthen these efforts. The Vienna Summit for Peace in Ukraine can be a\u00a0 powerful sign of hope and a catalyst for more and stronger peace actions globally. The future of humanity hangs in the balance; we must seize the moment before it\u2019s too late.<\/p>\n
