SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT . .<\/p>\n<p>An article from the <a href=\"https:\/\/news.un.org\/en\/story\/2023\/04\/1136017\">United Nations News Service<\/a><\/p>\n<p>More than half the world is being left behind at the midpoint for achieving the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, UN Secretary-General Ant\u00f3nio Guterres told ambassadors in New York on Tuesday (April 25).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/SDGs.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/SDGs.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1928\" height=\"1160\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-30641\" srcset=\"https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/SDGs.jpg 1928w, https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/SDGs-300x180.jpg 300w, https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/SDGs-1024x616.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/SDGs-768x462.jpg 768w, https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/SDGs-1536x924.jpg 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1928px) 100vw, 1928px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nUN News\u00a0Students in Tanzania hold Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) cards.<\/center><\/p>\n<p>Launching a special edition of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/sustainable-development-goals\/\">Sustainable Development Goals\u00a0<\/a> (SDGs) progress report, he warned that their collective promise made in 2015 of a more green, just and equitable global future, is in peril.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnless we act now, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/development-agenda\/\">2030 Agenda\u00a0<\/a> will become\u00a0an epitaph for a world that might have been,\u201d he said.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n<strong>Rising poverty and hunger\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The report reveals that just 12 per cent of the 169 SDG targets are on track, while progress on 50 per cent is weak and insufficient. Worst of all, he said is the fact that progress has either stalled or even reversed on more than 30 per cent of the goals.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The 17 SDGs are in a sorry state due to the impacts of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/coronavirus\">COVID-19\u00a0<\/a> pandemic and the devastating \u201ctriple crisis\u201d of climate, biodiversity and pollution, amplified by the Russian invasion of Ukraine.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\nAs a result, the number of people living in extreme poverty is\u00a0higher than it was four years ago. \u00a0Hunger has also increased and is now\u00a0back at 2005 levels, and gender equality is\u00a0some 300 years away. \u00a0 Other fallouts include record-high inequality and rising greenhouse gas emissions.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fundamental changes needed\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The UN chief noted that many developing countries cannot invest in the SDGs because of burdensome debt, while climate finance is far below commitments. Richer nations have not yet delivered on the $100 billion promised annually in support, he recalled, among other climate pledges.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe 2030 Agenda is\u00a0an agenda of justice and equality, of inclusive, sustainable development,\u00a0and\u00a0human rights and dignity for all. \u00a0It requires fundamental changes to the way the global economy is organized,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe SDGs are the path to\u00a0bridge both economic and geopolitical divides; to restore trust and rebuild solidarity,\u201d he added. \u00a0\u201cLet\u2019s be clear:\u00a0no country can afford to see them fail.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>SDG Stimulus\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Mr. Guterres has\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/news.un.org\/en\/story\/2023\/02\/1133637\">appealed <\/a> or an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/SDG-Stimulus-to-Deliver-Agenda-2030.pdf\">SDG Stimulus\u00a0<\/a> plan of at least $500 billion a year, and for deep reforms to the international financial architecture, both key recommendations in the report. <\/p>\n<p>(Article continued in the right side of the page)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"float: right; width: 46%;\">Question for this article:<\/div>\n<div style=\"float: right; width: 46%;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"float: right; width: 46%;\">\n<p align=\"justify\">\n<p><strong><em> <a href=\"https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/?p=8996\">Can UN agencies help eradicate poverty in the world?<\/a> <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>(Article continued from the left side of the page)<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0<br \/>\nThe SDG Stimulus aims to scale up affordable long-term financing for all countries in need, tackle debt and expand contingency financing \u2013 all areas that require action.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\nAlthough these measures can help to turn the situation around, he stressed that they will not solve the fundamental issue of the current unjust and dysfunctional global financial system, which will require deep reforms. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Globalization that benefits all\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Repeating his call for \u201ca new Bretton Woods moment\u201d &#8211; when the first negotiated international monetary rules were established in 1944, including the International Monetary Fund &#8211; Mr. Guterres said developing countries must have greater representation in global financial institutions.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u201cWe need a financial system that\u00a0ensures the benefits of globalization flow to all, by putting the\u00a0needs of developing countries\u00a0at the centre of all its decisions,\u201d he said. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The SDG progress report also contains five other important recommendations. \u00a0\u00a0<br \/>\nCommit and deliver\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The first calls for all UN Member States to\u00a0recommit to achieve the goals, at the national and international levels, by strengthening the social contract and steering their economies to the green transition.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The second point urges governments to set and deliver on national benchmarks to\u00a0reduce poverty and inequality\u00a0by 2027 and 2030, which requires focus on areas such as expanding social protection and jobs, but also education, gender equality, and \u201cdigital inclusion\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The report calls for all countries to commit\u00a0\u201cto end the war on nature\u201d. Governments are urged to support the Acceleration Agenda for climate action, under which leaders of developed countries commit to reaching net zero emissions, and to deliver on the new\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.unep.org\/news-and-stories\/story\/cop15-ends-landmark-biodiversity-agreement#:~:text=The GBF consists of four,to people are valued, maintained\">Global Biodiversity Framework, <\/a> signed in December.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Support for development\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The fourth point focused on the need for governments to strengthen national institutions and accountability. \u201cThis will require\u00a0new regulatory frameworks\u00a0and stronger public digital infrastructure and data capacity,\u201d said Mr. Guterres.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>His final point underscored the need for greater multilateral support for the UN development system and decisive action at the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/common-agenda\/summit-of-the-future\">Summit of the Future\u00a0<\/a> to be held next year.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Hopes for SDG Summit\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In the interim, world leaders will gather at the UN in September for the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/conferences\/SDGSummit2023#:~:text=The 2023 SDG Summit \u2013 the,General Assembly high-level week.\">SDG Summit<\/a>. This will be a moment of truth and reckoning, Mr. Guterres said, though adding that it must also be\u00a0a moment of hope\u00a0towards kickstarting a new drive to achieve the goals.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Secretary-General insisted that \u201cSDG progress is not about lines on a graph\u201d, but rather about healthy mothers and babies, children learning the skills to fulfil their potential, renewable energy and clean air, and other such development accomplishments.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe road ahead is steep.
