(Photo: Christophe Gateau\/picture alliance via Getty Images)<\/center><\/p>\n<p>During a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/unfccc-events.azureedge.net\/COP27_90741\/agenda\"> speech\u00a0<\/a>  at the United Nations COP27 climate conference in Egypt\u2014his first on the international stage since he\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2022\/10\/30\/brazil-hope-leftist-lula-defeats-far-right-bolsonaro-presidential-runoff\"> defeated\u00a0<\/a>  Brazil&#8217;s outgoing far-right president, Jair Bolsonaro, just over two weeks ago\u2014Lula\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/adamvaughan_uk\/status\/1592905644994007041\"> said\u00a0<\/a>  that &#8220;there&#8217;s no climate security for the world without a protected Amazon,&#8221; roughly 60% of which is located in Brazil.<\/p>\n<p>(article continued in right column)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"float: right; width: 46%;\">Question for this article:<\/div>\n<div style=\"float: right; width: 46%;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"float: right; width: 46%;\">\n<p align=\"justify\">\n<p><strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/?p=8021\">Despite the vested interests of companies and governments, Can we make progress toward sustainable development?<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em><strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/?p=29551\">Latin America, has it taken the lead in the struggle for a culture of peace?<\/a> <\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>(Article continued from the left column)<\/p>\n<p>Parts of the Amazon, often referred to as the &#8220;lungs of the Earth&#8221; due to its unparalleled capacity to provide oxygen and absorb planet-heating carbon dioxide, recently\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2022\/09\/05\/new-study-warns-swaths-amazon-have-already-passed-key-tipping-point\"> passed\u00a0<\/a>  a key tipping point after Bolsonaro\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2022\/05\/06\/green-groups-blame-bolsonaro-policies-amazon-deforestation-sets-new-monthly-record\"> intensified\u00a0<\/a>  the destruction of the tropical rainforest during his four-year reign. According to one\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sumauma.com\/en\/dois-bilhoes-de-arvores-mortas-na-amazonia-em-quatro-anos_\/\"> estimate <\/a>, Bolsonaro&#8217;s regressive policy changes are responsible for the eradication of as many as two billion trees in South America&#8217;s largest nation.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This devastation [of the Amazon] will be a thing of the past,&#8221;\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/b0985574-3342-41ca-a27e-5db9d0459069\"> said\u00a0<\/a>  Lula, who previously served as Brazil&#8217;s president from 2003 to 2010 and takes office again on January 1. &#8220;The crimes that happened during the current government will now be combated. We will rebuild our enforcement capabilities and monitoring systems that were dismantled during the past four years.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Most of the deforestation that occurred under Bolsonaro was illegal, propelled by logging, mining, and agribusiness companies that often used violence to run roughshod over Indigenous inhabitants of the Amazon.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We will fight hard against illegal deforestation,&#8221; the 77-year-old Lula, a member of the Workers&#8217; Party, continued. &#8220;We will take care of Indigenous people.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m here to tell you that Brazil is back in the world. Brazil is emerging from the cocoon to which it has been subjected for the last four years,&#8221; added Lula, who drastically reduced deforestation and channeled an economic boom into downwardly redistributive programs that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/as-brazil-tilts-rightward-lulas-leftist-legacy-of-lifting-the-poor-is-at-risk-65939\"> curbed inequality\u00a0<\/a>  when he governed Brazil earlier this century.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>. .
