width: 46%;\">\n<p>FREE FLOW OF INFORMATION<\/p>\n<p>Excerpts from a press release of the <a href=\"https:\/\/press.un.org\/en\/2022\/sgt3321.doc.htm\">United Nations<w\/a><\/p>\n<p>The United Nations Secretary-General Ant\u00f3nio Guterres arrived in\u00a0<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/dam.media.un.org\/CS.aspx?VP3=DamView&#038;VBID=2AM94S3K9TL#\/DamView&#038;VBID=2AM94S7KNQ3P&#038;PN=1&#038;WS=SearchResults\">Hiroshima\u00a0<\/a> from New York on the evening of Friday, 5\u00a0August.<\/p>\n<p>On Saturday, he spoke at the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Ceremony, which aims to console the souls of those lost to the atomic bombing, as well as pray for the realization of lasting world peace. \u00a0In his remarks, the Secretary-General underscored that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/antonioguterres\/status\/1556208219743473665\">nuclear weapons are nonsense\u00a0<\/a> and called on countries to work urgently to eliminate the stockpiles that threaten our future.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Guterres-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Guterres-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1260\" height=\"788\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-28002\" srcset=\"https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Guterres-1.jpg 1260w, https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Guterres-1-300x188.jpg 300w, https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Guterres-1-1024x640.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Guterres-1-768x480.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1260px) 100vw, 1260px\" \/><\/a><\/center><\/p>\n<p>The Secretary-General said his message to leaders is simple: \u00a0Stop flirting with disaster. \u00a0Take the nuclear option off the table \u2014 for good. \u00a0[See\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/press.un.org\/en\/2022\/sgsm21401.doc.htm\">Press Release SG\/SM\/21401]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>After the ceremony, he met with Prime Minister of Japan,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/antonioguterres\/status\/1555840580625698816\">Fumio Kishida<\/a>, with whom he discussed issues in the region including the situation in the Korean Peninsula and Japan\u2019s efforts to tackle climate change, among others. \u00a0After their meeting, the Prime Minister gave the Secretary-General a special tour of the\u00a0Peace Museum, and they then signed the museum\u2019s guestbook.<br \/>\n(continued in right column)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"float: right; width: 46%;\">Question(s) related to this article:<\/div>\n<div style=\"float: right; width: 46%;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"float: right; width: 46%;\">\n<p align=\"justify\">\n<p><em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/?p=8700\">What is the United Nations doing for a culture of peace?<\/a><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>(continued from left column)<\/p>\n<p>Following the tour, the Secretary-General met with a group of survivors of the atomic bomb, known as the\u00a0hibakusha,\u00a0who shared their experiences with him.<\/p>\n<p>This encounter was followed by a meeting with the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/dam.media.un.org\/CS.aspx?VP3=DamView&#038;VBID=2AM94S3K9TL#\/DamView&#038;VBID=2AM94S7KFQ0P&#038;PN=1&#038;WS=SearchResults\">Mayors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki\u00a0<\/a> who bestowed upon him a special honorary citizenship. \u00a0Accepting this honour, the Secretary-General said that it is impossible for people to come to Hiroshima and not to feel the absurdity of the existence of nuclear weapons, and that he accepted this honour on behalf of all those working for a nuclear weapons-free world and in the memory of those tens of thousands of people who were killed in Hiroshima and Nagasaki 77\u00a0years ago. \u00a0[See\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/press.un.org\/en\/2022\/sgsm21402.doc.htm\">Press Release SG\/SM\/21402]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>He then held a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sg\/en\/content\/sg\/press-encounter\/2022-08-06\/secretary-generals-press-encounter-hiroshima-japan-scroll-down-for-qa\">press encounter\u00a0<\/a> in Hiroshima and told reporters that the world is in danger of forgetting the lessons forged in this city 77\u00a0years ago. \u00a0He added that it is unacceptable for states in possession of nuclear weapons to admit the possibility of nuclear war.\u00a0 He stressed that we must use every avenue of dialogue, diplomacy and negotiation to ease tensions and eliminate the nuclear threat.<\/p>\n<p>The Secretary-General also met with the Hiroshima Governor, Hidehiko Yuzaki, and then took part in a dialogue with young activists who are leading initiatives on nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation.\u00a0 He emphasized the importance of young people speaking up for nuclear disarmament and keeping the memory of the impacts of the bombings alive. \u00a0This was followed by an interview with the national broadcaster NHK at the United Nations Institute for Training and Research\u00a0(UNITAR) offices. \u00a0He then met and took pictures with the UNITAR staff members.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>FREE FLOW OF INFORMATION Excerpts from a press release of the United Nations The United Nations Secretary-General Ant\u00f3nio Guterres arrived in\u00a0Hiroshima\u00a0 from New York on the evening of Friday, 5\u00a0August.
