Amidst spreading conflict and rising tensions, he reminded that the appeal calls on all parties to observe a ceasefire throughout the course of the upcoming winter games.<\/p>\n

\u2018A date with history\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n

In the spirit of \u201cmutual understanding, hard work and fair play\u201d, the top UN official noted that\u00a0athletes competing from around the world \u201chave a date with history\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn a few days, our human family will come together in Beijing for the\u00a0Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games<\/a>\u201d, the UN chief said in his message encouraging everyone to strive for the Olympic ideal.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis spirit inspires us all\u201d, he said.<\/p>\n

Beyond sports<\/strong><\/p>\n

Mr. Guterres said that\u00a0the Olympic Truce represents \u201ca chance to overcome differences and find paths towards lasting peace\u201d.<\/p>\n

As the world strives to end the\u00a0COVID-19\u00a0pandemic, he urged everyone to \u201cunite for a safer, more prosperous and sustainable future for all\u201d.<\/p>\n

The Olympic Truce has a 3,000-year-old history, dating from when the Ancient Greeks established the sacred truce of\u00a0Ekecheiria\u00a0to allow the participation in the Olympic Games of all athletes and spectators from the Greek city states, which were otherwise almost constantly engaged in conflict with one other.<\/p>\n

General Assembly President Abdulla Shahid\u00a0appealed\u00a0<\/a> to all Member States to demonstrate their commitment to the Olympic Truce and to undertake \u201cconcrete actions at the local, national, regional and world levels to promote and strengthen a culture of peace and harmony\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cI also call upon all warring parties of current armed conflicts around the world to boldly agree to true mutual ceasefires\u00a0for the duration of the Olympic Truce, thus providing an opportunity to settle disputes peacefully\u201d, he added.<\/p>\n

Remaining neutral<\/strong><\/p>\n

UN resolution 76\/13, entitled \u201cBuilding a peaceful and better world through sport and the Olympic ideal\u201d, was co-sponsored by 173 UN Member States and adopted by consensus.<\/p>\n

It called for the observance of a\u00a0truce during the 2022 Beijing games, beginning seven days before the start of the Olympic games, on 4 February, until seven days after the end of the Paralympics.<\/p>\n

It also encouraged all Member States to cooperate with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in using sport as \u201ca tool to promote peace, dialogue and reconciliation in areas of conflict during and beyond the period of the Olympic and Paralympic Games\u201d.<\/p>\n

IOC President Thomas Bach\u00a0described\u00a0<\/a> the resolution as \u201ca great recognition\u201d of the Games\u2019 mission \u201cto unite the best athletes of the world in peaceful competition and standing above any political dispute\u201d.<\/p>\n
