When do we want it? Now!\u201d echoed throughout central Glasgow on Friday as thousands of protesters took the streets during the dedicated \u201cYouth Day\u201d at COP26.<\/p>\n<p>Although the march was initially organized by Fridays for Future, the youth-driven movement inspired by Swedish activist Greta Thunberg, people of all ages gathered at George Square to demand climate action.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Glasgow.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Glasgow.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1880\" height=\"994\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-25573\" srcset=\"https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Glasgow.jpg 1880w, https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Glasgow-300x159.jpg 300w, https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Glasgow-1024x541.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Glasgow-768x406.jpg 768w, https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Glasgow-1536x812.jpg 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1880px) 100vw, 1880px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nUN News\/Laura Qui\u00f1ones<\/center><\/p>\n<p>From small children waving their handmade picket signs, to older adults demanding a better future for those that will come after them, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ukcop26.org\/\">COP26\u00a0<\/a> host city saw citizen activists in unprecedented numbers rallying to get their message heard.<\/p>\n<p>An even\u00a0larger\u00a0march is\u00a0expected on\u00a0Saturday.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Welsh citizen Jane Mansfield carried around a sign that read: \u201cCode red for humanity\u201d, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sg\/en\/content\/secretary-generals-statement-the-ipcc-working-group-1-report-the-physical-science-basis-of-the-sixth-assessment\">signature phrase\u00a0<\/a> UN Secretary General\u00a0Ant\u00f3nio Guterres\u00a0used\u00a0after\u00a0the latest\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/news.un.org\/en\/story\/2021\/08\/1097362\">IPCC\u00a0report\u00a0<\/a> published earlier this year\u00a0warned of a\u00a0looming\u00a0climate catastrophe.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI really care about the world that we are passing on to future generations, and what we are doing to the Global South. I live in southwest\u00a0Wales and climate change is clearly happening, but\u00a0we don\u00b4t even grasp what is happening in so many\u00a0other\u00a0parts of the world and I am scared,\u201d\u00a0she told UN News.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Latin-American Indigenous leaders\u00a0were\u00a0also\u00a0among today\u2019s\u00a0demonstrations.\u00a0They were the ones leading the march\u00a0and several of them sent a loud message to world leaders: stop extracting resources and\u00a0to\u00a0\u2018leave carbon\u00a0in\u00a0the\u00a0ground\u2019.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIndigenous people are dying in the\u00a0river;\u00a0they\u2019re being washed away by massive floods. Houses are being washed away, schools full\u00a0of\u00a0children inside, bridges, our food our crops, everything is being washed away\u201d, they said at a stage in George Square.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, some activists wore\u00a0bobblehead masks of\u00a0presidents\u00a0and prime ministers\u00a0and\u00a0depicted them as being arrested with signs that read\u00a0\u201cclimate criminals\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>More real action, less \u2018greenwashing\u2019\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Swedish activist Greta Thunberg was the last to appear\u00a0on\u00a0the protest\u2019s stage, where she criticized world leaders for their continued \u201cblah, blah, blah\u201d\u00a0after 26 years of climate conferences\u00a0and put in doubt the transparency of the commitments they have made during\u00a0this\u00a0COP.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe leaders are not doing nothing;\u00a0they are actively creating loopholes and shaping frameworks to benefit themselves, and to continue profiting from this destructive system. This is an active choice by the leaders to continue the exploitation of nature and people and the destruction of presents and future living conditions to take place\u201d, she said, calling the\u00a0conference\u00a0a \u201cgreenwashing event\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Other\u00a0Fridays for Future\u00a0members, speaking to UN News, asked for more participation and better youth representation in the negotiations that are underway at COP26.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery year we have been disappointed by COP, and I don\u2019t think this year will be different.\u00a0There is a sliver of hope but at the same time we don\u2019t see enough action, we can\u2019t achieve anything with just pledges\u00a0and empty promises\u201d, said\u00a0a representative\u00a0of\u00a0Youth\u00a0Advocates for Climate Change in the Philippines\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>(article continued in right column)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"float: right; width: 46%;\">Question for this article:<\/div>\n<div style=\"float: right; width: 46%;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"float: right; width: 46%;\">\n<p align=\"justify\">\n<p><strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/?p=18980\">Sustainable Development Summits of States, What are the results?<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/?p=8021\">Despite the vested interests of companies and governments, Can we make progress toward sustainable development?<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/?p=20946\">Are we seeing the dawn of a global youth movement?<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>(Article continued from the left column)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNegotiations are happening and yet we are here in the street, because we haven\u2019t been included. The richest people come in their private jets and take the decisions. We are here and we won\u2019t be ignored. We will make our own space\u201d, another climate advocate added.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Youth Statement\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The same call was made inside the conference&#8217;s Blue Zone, where climate activists from YOUNGO, the Children and Youth Constituency of UN Climate Change, delivered to the COP Presidency and other leaders a statement signed by 40,000\u00a0young\u00a0people demanding change.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The statement\u00a0raised several points of concern, among them\u00a0inclusion\u00a0in climate negotiations. It also asked\u00a0Patricia Espinosa, the\u00a0Executive Secretary of the\u00a0UN\u00a0Framework Convention on Climate Change (<a href=\"https:\/\/unfccc.int\/\">UNFCCC<\/a>),\u00a0to support\u00a0young people&#8217;s efforts\u00a0to\u00a0have a\u00a0paragraph mentioning the importance of the youth included\u00a0in\u00a0the final declaration\u00a0that is expected to be adopted\u00a0at the end of\u00a0COP26.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will be bringing these issues and demands to the attentions of the delegations, all of them are absolutely reasonable and justifiable,\u201d\u00a0she vowed\u00a0during a panel discussion with young leaders.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The statement,\u00a0which\u00a0was handed over to\u00a0Ministers,\u00a0also asks for action on climate finance, mobility and transportation, wildlife protection\u00a0and environmental\u00a0conservation.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWherever I have been in the world, I have been struck by the passion and the commitment of young people to climate action. The voices of young people must be heard and reflected in these negotiations here at COP. The actions and scrutiny of young people are key to us keeping 1.5 alive and creating a net-zero future\u201d, said Alok Sharma, COP26\u00a0President.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the UK and Italy, in partnership with\u00a0UNESCO, Youth4Climate and Mock COP coordinated new global action to equip future generations with the knowledge and skills to create a net-zero world.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As Education Ministers and young people gathered, over 23 countries put forward national climate education pledges, ranging from\u00a0decarbonizing\u00a0the\u00a0education\u00a0sector to developing school resources.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>The youth are right:\u00a0the\u00a0new commitments aren\u2019t enough\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0UNFCCC published\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/unfccc.int\/news\/cop26-update-to-the-ndc-synthesis-report\">its\u00a0latest updates of the national commitments\u00a0<\/a> thus\u00a0far\u00a0to reduce carbon emissions, and although some advances have been\u00a0made\u00a0during the conference, they are still not enough.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA sizable increase, of about 13.7\u00a0per\u00a0cent,\u00a0in global greenhouse emissions in 2030 compared to 2010 is anticipated\u201d, the report says.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Before COP, the increase was calculated at 16\u00a0per\u00a0cent,\u00a0but for the world to be able to curb global heating and avoid disastrous consequences, emissions must be cut by 50\u00a0per\u00a0cent\u00a0in the next\u00a0nine\u00a0years.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>For Carla Huanca,\u00a0a young activist\u00a0who travelled all the way from Bolivia to be in Glasgow with her friend, the dinosaur \u201cT-Resilient\u201d, another extinction can\u2019t be a possibility.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe young people will be the ones that will inherit this planet, and that is why\u00a0it\u00a0is\u00a0so important that our voices are heard.\u00a0We demand government actions\u00a0so we can all have the planet we want,\u201d\u00a0she told UN News.<\/p>\n<p>(Thank you to Phyllis Kotite, the CPNN reporter for this article.)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>. .
