In his message for the\u00a0International Day of Non-Violence, on Saturday, the UN chief noted that the day provides an opportunity to usher in a \u201cnew era of peace, trust and tolerance\u201d.<\/p>\n

Secretary-General Ant\u00f3nio Guterres\u00a0pointed out that it was no coincidence that the day coincides with the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi \u2013 leader of India\u2019s independence movement and a founder of the principles of non-violence.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor Gandhi, non-violence, peaceful protest, dignity and equality were more than words. They represented a guiding light for humanity, a map to a better future\u201d, he said.<\/p>\n

\u2018Template\u2019 for the future<\/strong><\/p>\n

The UN chief also pointed to the movement as \u201ca template\u201d to confront today\u2019s troubled times. \u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cConflicts and climate change. Poverty and inequalities. \u00a0Mistrust and divisions. \u00a0All under the shadow of the\u00a0COVID-19\u00a0pandemic, which continues to devastate people and economies alike\u201d, he said.<\/p>\n

The UN chief underscored that the solution to these challenges \u201cis in our hands: solidarity\u201d. \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0
\nSolutions \u2018in our hands\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n

The principle of non-violence, also known as non-violent resistance, rejects the use of physical force to achieve social or political change and has been adopted globally in campaigns for social justice.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u201cWe need to recognize, as Gandhi did, that what unites us is far greater than what divides us. That peace provides the only pathway to a better future for all\u201d, he said.<\/p>\n

Coming together as one<\/strong><\/p>\n

Addressing global challenges means \u201ccoming together as one human family, and embracing peace like never before\u201d, Mr. Guterres said, calling on combatants around the world to lay down their arms and \u201cfocus on defeating humanity\u2019s common enemy \u2013\u00a0COVID-19\u00a0\u2013 not one another\u201d. \u00a0<\/p>\n

He underscored the urgent need to deliver lifesaving vaccines and treatment, \u201cand support countries in the long road to recovery ahead\u201d; intensify efforts to reduce inequalities and end poverty; and create \u201ca bold global plan of action\u201d to heal the planet. \u00a0<\/p>\n

Most of all, flagged the UN chief, \u201cwe need to renew trust in one another\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cHatred, division, conflict and mistrust have had their day\u201d, he said. \u00a0\u201cIt is time to usher in a new era of peace, trust and tolerance\u201d.<\/p>\n
