WOMEN&#8217;S EQUALITY .<\/p>\n<p>An article from the <a href=\"https:\/\/news.un.org\/en\/story\/2021\/07\/1095272\">United Nations<\/a><\/p>\n<p>With\u00a0the chief\u00a0of the\u00a0UN\u2019s\u00a0gender empowerment\u00a0agency\u00a0declaring\u00a0that\u00a0women are still\u00a0\u201csitting in the corridors when men are inside at the table negotiating peace\u201d,\u00a0the\u00a0historic\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/forum.generationequality.org\/home\">Generation Equality Forum\u00a0<\/a> in\u00a0Paris\u00a0concluded\u00a0on Friday\u00a0[July 2] with new\u00a0commitments\u00a0designed\u00a0to address that,\u00a0and other\u00a0injustices.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/forum.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/forum.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"710\" height=\"484\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-24464\" srcset=\"https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/forum.jpg 710w, https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/forum-300x205.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 710px) 100vw, 710px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nPhoto: UN Women<\/center><\/p>\n<p>Close to\u00a0$40\u00a0billion\u00a0was pledged in new investments,\u00a0as well as ambitious policy and\u00a0programme\u00a0commitments from\u00a0governments, civil society and\u00a0others,\u00a0to help\u00a0fuel\u00a0a\u00a0new\u00a0global\u00a0five-year action\u00a0plan\u00a0to accelerate\u00a0true gender\u00a0parity,\u00a0by 2026.\u00a0\u00a0<br \/>\n\u201cThe Generation Equality Forum marks a positive, historic shift in power and perspective\u201d,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.unwomen.org\/en\/news\/stories\/2021\/7\/press-release-launch-of-the-compact-on-women-peace-and-security-and-humanitarian-action\">said\u00a0<\/a> Phumzile\u00a0Mlambo-Ngcuka, Executive Director of UN Women.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0Forum\u00a0has been held at a critical moment,\u00a0as the world assesses the disproportionate and\u00a0damaging\u00a0impact\u00a0of\u00a0the\u00a0 COVID-19\u00a0pandemic\u00a0on women and girls.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Gender equality advocates\u00a0took the opportunity to press\u00a0for gender-responsive stimulus and recovery plans to ensure that women and girls are not left behind as the world re-builds.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Timely commitments\u202f\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0$40\u00a0billion\u00a0in\u00a0investments\u00a0represent a major step-change in resourcing for women\u2019s and girls\u2019 rights,\u00a0as lack of financing\u00a0has\u00a0been\u00a0a major reason for slow progress in advancing gender equality and in enacting the women\u2019s rights agenda of the milestone\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/womenwatch\/daw\/beijing\/fwcwn.html\">1995 Beijing Conference<\/a>,\u00a0according to UN Women.<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0<br \/>\nGovernments and public sector institutions\u00a0have\u00a0committed to\u00a0$21\u00a0billion\u00a0spending on\u00a0gender equality investments, the private sector\u00a0$13\u00a0billion and\u00a0philanthropy\u00a0$4.5\u00a0billion.<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0<br \/>\nUN entities, international and regional organizations committed an aggregate of\u00a0$1.3\u00a0billion.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Forum\u2019s ecosystem of partners \u2013 and the investments, commitments and energy they are bringing to confront the greatest barriers to gender equality \u2013 will ensure faster progress for the world\u2019s women and girls than we have seen before\u201d, said the\u00a0head of\u00a0UN Women.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>(continued in right column)<\/p>\n<p>(Click <a href=\"https:\/\/cpnn-world.org\/french\/?p=9167\">here <\/a> for the article in French.)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"float: right; width: 46%;\"><strong><em>Questions for this article<\/em><\/strong><\/div>\n<div style=\"float: right; width: 46%;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"float: right; width: 46%;\">\n<p align=\"justify\">\n<p><em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/?p=9261\"><strong>Does the UN advance equality for women?<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/?p=9166\">Prospects for progress in women&#8217;s equality, what are the short and long term prospects?<\/a><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>(continued from left column)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Multilateral approach<\/strong><br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\nMany organizations\u00a0have\u00a0made strong policy and program commitments, including 440 civil society organizations and 94 youth-led organizations.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Hosting the event,\u00a0the\u00a0French\u00a0Ambassador\u00a0and Secretary-General of the Forum,\u00a0Delphine O,\u00a0said\u00a0the it had \u201creversed the priorities on the international agenda and made gender equality, for too long underestimated, a long-term issue for the international community, along with climate, education and health. France will continue to be at the forefront to accelerate gender equality progress\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Others speak out\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>UN Women Goodwill Ambassador,\u00a0Anne Hathaway,\u00a0gave her personal commitment to \u201ccontinue to be a global advocate for the legal\u00a0and\u00a0policy changes that will empower both women\u00a0and\u00a0men to begin the equal distribution of care responsibilities that will help change our world\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Former US\u00a0Ambassador to the UN Samantha Power,\u00a0who now heads the US international development agency,\u00a0USAID,\u00a0offered \u201ca simple message, informed by decades of evidence: if you want peace in this world, trust women to deliver it\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>African Union Goodwill Ambassador on Ending Child Marriage,\u00a0Nyaradzayi\u00a0<br \/>\nGumbonzvanda,\u00a0said:\u00a0\u201cThis week, I relived the experience of 1995, when I was a young women&#8217;s rights activist at the Beijing Conference\u2026Now it\u2019s time to invest in girls and young women even more \u2013 for resources to reach rural and marginalized communities, for technology for public good and available to all, and for Member States\u2019 greater accountability to human rights of women and girls\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Taking the lead\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Over\u00a0the past\u00a0three days, the Forum engaged nearly 50,000 people in a mainly virtual format to\u00a0rapidly advance\u00a0of gender justice.\u00a0\u00a0<br \/>\nIt\u00a0launched a <a href=\"https:\/\/unwomen.us6.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=4a4c7b832288dbbd2a91f5cfa&#038;id=d02d2b1720&#038;e=5f1764eca4\">\u202fGlobal Acceleration Plan for Gender Equality\u202f<\/a> designed by six\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/forum.generationequality.org\/action-coalitions\">Action Coalitions<\/a>,\u00a0partnerships that have identified the most critical actions required to achieve gender equality,\u00a0ranging\u00a0from gender-based violence and technology to economic and climate justice.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Forum also launched a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/forum.generationequality.org\/women-peace-security-and-humanitarian-action-wps-ha-compact#:~:text=As one of the key,gender equality in humanitarian action.\">Compact on Women, Peace and Security and Humanitarian Action<\/a>, and announced new gender equality initiatives focused on health, sports, culture, and education.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>UN Women will maintain a critical role driving the Forum\u2019s 5-year action\u00a0plan, overseeing the implementation of commitments to ensure accountability and progress.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTogether we have mobilized across different sectors of society, from south to north, to become a formidable force, ready to open a new chapter in gender equality\u201d, said Ms.\u00a0Mlambo-Ngcuka.<\/p>\n<p>(Thank you to Phyllis Kotite, the CPNN reporter for this article.)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>.
