In a bid to put gender equality at the heart of COVID recovery, UN Women kicked off a three-day \u201clandmark effort\u201d in Paris on Wednesday, aiming to lay out ambitious investments and policies to bridge the chasm between where women stand in the world today, and where they should be, by 2030.\u2028\u00a0
\n\u201cGender equality is essentially about power, and power in a world that is still largely male dominated, with a culture that is still largely patriarchal\u201d,\u00a0Secretary-General Ant\u00f3nio Guterres\u00a0said\u00a0at the\u00a0Generation Equality Forum,\u00a0launching a\u00a0\u201cfive-year\u00a0action journey\u201d, based on\u00a0the UN\u00a0Global Acceleration Plan for Gender Equality<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Noting that\u00a0\u201cpower is very rarely given.\u202fYou have to take it\u201d,\u00a0he stressed as one of his five priorities, the importance of\u00a0parity\u00a0to redistribute power and create the necessary\u00a0conditions for\u00a0true\u00a0equality.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Setting priorities\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

The UN chief\u00a0said that to achieve\u00a0equal rights,\u00a0discriminatory laws around the world must be repealed\u00a0and\u00a0transformed\u00a0into\u00a0\u2018de facto\u2019\u00a0equality.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

He said women in the\u00a0informal economy,\u00a0were\u00a0\u201cpaying a heavy price for the pandemic\u201d,\u00a0also highlighting\u00a0economic equality\u00a0in pay,\u00a0employment,\u00a0and\u00a0social protections.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Noting\u00a0a\u00a0surge\u00a0in violence against women and girls\u00a0during\u00a0COVID,\u00a0Mr. Guterres\u00a0said\u00a0that\u00a0putting an end to\u00a0it must be\u00a0\u201ca\u00a0central element of all policies and all of our objectives\u201d.

\nFinally, he highlighted\u00a0the importance of\u00a0intergenerational dialogue\u00a0as\u00a0\u201canother fundamental instrument for gender equality\u201d\u00a0to\u00a0allow young people to be a part of decision-making\u00a0in\u00a0today\u2019s\u00a0digital society.\u00a0

\nWomen worth more than a quarter\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

In her\u00a0statement<\/a>,\u00a0UN Women\u00a0Executive Director\u00a0Phumzile\u00a0Mlambo-Ngcuka,\u00a0said that \u201cwomen everywhere in the world are squeezed into a small corner\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

She\u00a0highlighted\u00a0how\u00a0they\u00a0make up\u00a0a quarter\u00a0of\u00a0all\u00a0managers, parliamentarians, climate change\u00a0negotiators and \u201cless than one quarter of those who negotiate peace agreements\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cOne quarter is not enough. One quarter is not equality. Equality is one half, where both men and women are together\u201d, she spelled out.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Moving\u00a0forward\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Generation Equality is about change, the UN Women\u00a0chief\u00a0said, it\u2019s\u00a0about\u00a0\u201cmoving from making promises\u201d to\u00a0saying what has been done to advance women\u00a0worldwide.\u00a0<\/p>\n

She detailed that\u00a0Member States,\u00a0the\u00a0private sector and\u00a0others,\u00a0have made nearly\u00a01,000 commitments\u00a0to\u00a0change the lives of women, including\u00a0to change policies.\u00a0\u00a0
\nHowever,\u00a0Ms.\u00a0Mlambo-Ngcuka\u00a0continued, \u201cthe fight still has to continue\u2026We need to be pushing upwards all the time, so that there is a race to the top\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Stepping up funds\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

The UN Women chief\u00a0concluded by detailing that\u00a0countries\u00a0of the Global South,\u00a0regional organizations, young people\u00a0and\u00a0civil society groups,\u00a0have all \u201cput their foot forward\u201d raising $40 billion, saying\u00a0\u201cand we are still counting\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Meanwhile,\u00a0Chancellor\u00a0Angela Merkel\u00a0declared\u00a0that Germany \u201cis actively involved in the\u00a0Action Coalition on Economic Justice\u00a0and\u00a0Rights<\/a>\u201d\u00a0and\u00a0would\u00a0invest\u00a0an \u201cadditional \u20ac140 million, making a total of around \u20ac240 million in the\u00a0International Action Coalition<\/a>\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n

And\u00a0the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation\u202fannounced\u00a0that\u00a0it would spend $2.1 billion to advance global gender equality.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Achieving \u2018tangible progress\u2019\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

At the same time,\u00a0the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization\u00a0(UNESCO)\u00a0launched\u00a0a set of\u00a0commitments\u00a0<\/a> to achieve\u00a0\u201ctangible progress\u201d\u00a0towards gender equality over the next five years.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The UN agency will support\u00a0girls\u2019\u00a0education\u00a0<\/a> with quality gender-transformative teaching\u00a0for\u00a028 million learners in\u00a0over\u00a080 countries;\u00a0work to close\u00a0the digital gender divide<\/a>, empower women scientists, and promote ethical Artificial Intelligence; and\u00a0in Africa,\u00a0empower\u00a0<\/a> women\u00a0economically\u00a0in creative industries.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

UNESCO\u00a0chief\u00a0Audrey\u00a0Azoulay\u00a0had\u00a0called\u00a0upon women worldwide to\u00a0\u201ctake control and full leadership in every aspect of life and domain of society to build back a better future for all\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Co-hosting the event,\u00a0French President\u00a0Emmanuel Macron\u202fsaid that the struggle for gender equality is\u00a0\u201cfar from won\u201d.\u00a0

\nHis counterpart,\u00a0Andr\u00e9s Manuel L\u00f3pez Obrador,\u00a0President of Mexico, said:\u00a0\u201cWe must continue to fight against sexism. We must not forget economic and social equality, which is fundamental to achieve a better society\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Call\u00a0to\u00a0action from Clinton, Harris\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

United States Vice President Kamala Harris,\u00a0warned that \u201cdemocracy is in peril\u201d around the world.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI believe, resolutely, that if we want to strengthen democracy, we must fight for gender equality\u2026Democracy is strongest when everyone participates\u00a0\u2013\u00a0and it is weaker when people are left out\u2026without doubt, gender equality strengthens democracy\u201d, she said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Back\u00a0in1995,\u00a0at the\u00a0World Conference on Women\u00a0<\/a> in Beijing,\u00a0then-First Lady Hillary Clinton proclaimed:\u00a0\u201cHuman rights are women\u2019s rights and women\u2019s rights are human rights once and for all\u201d\u202f.\u00a0<\/p>\n

At today\u2019s meeting she sent a message\u00a0that\u00a0\u201cit\u2019s no longer enough to talk about women\u2019s rights\u2026[as]\u00a0they are nothing without the power to claim them. And we know that when women have the power to raise our voices, assert our rights, and rebuild economies, everyone will be better off\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Marija\u00a0Pej\u010dinovi\u0107\u00a0Buri\u0107, Secretary General of the Council of Europe,\u00a0drew attention to\u00a0the Convention on preventing and combating violence against women,\u00a0or the\u00a0Istanbul Convention<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cLast year, we saw a surge in domestic violence during COVID lockdowns. The Convention provides three advantages that no country alone can: it raises national standards; provides a monitoring mechanism; and ensures co-operation between governments in the prosecution of these crimes\u201d,\u00a0she said.<\/p>\n
