{"id":22762,"date":"2021-01-27T02:00:04","date_gmt":"2021-01-27T07:00:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/?p=22762"},"modified":"2021-01-27T02:03:14","modified_gmt":"2021-01-27T07:03:14","slug":"us-russia-agree-to-extend-new-start-nuclear-arms-treaty","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/?p=22762","title":{"rendered":"US, Russia agree to extend &#8216;New START&#8217; nuclear arms treaty"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"float: left; width: 46%;\">\n<p>DISARMAMENT &#038; SECURITY .<\/p>\n<p>An article from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/us-russia-agree-to-extend-new-start-nuclear-arms-treaty\/a-56354318\">Deutsche Welle<\/a> (reprinted by permission)<\/p>\n<p>The United States and Russia &#8220;agreed in principle&#8221; to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/biden-seeks-extension-of-start-nuclear-treaty-with-russia\/a-56307891\">extend the New START\u00a0<\/a> arms treaty by five years, the Kremlin reported on its website Tuesday following a phone call between US President Joe Biden and Russian President Vladimir Putin.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/START.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/START.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"846\" height=\"582\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-22763\" srcset=\"https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/START.jpg 846w, https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/START-300x206.jpg 300w, https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/START-768x528.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 846px) 100vw, 846px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/allthingsnuclear.org\/lgronlund\/newstart\">Obama and Medvedev signing the START treaty in 2010 (Source: White House photo)<\/a><\/center><\/p>\n<p>A Kremlin description of the call between\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/opinion-why-putin-is-in-no-hurry-to-congratulate-biden\/a-55547172\">the two leaders\u00a0<\/a> said they had both &#8220;expressed satisfaction&#8221; that diplomatic notes had been exchanged earlier Tuesday confirming that the treaty would be extended,<\/p>\n<p>Putin had submitted a draft bill for the extension to the Russian Parliament, the Kremlin statement added.\u00a0The extension doesn&#8217;t require approval from lawmakers in the US.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>(Continued in right column)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"float: right; width: 46%;\">Question related to this article:<\/div>\n<div style=\"float: right; width: 46%;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"float: right; width: 46%;\">\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n<em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/?p=5035\">Can we abolish all nuclear weapons?<\/a> <\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Deadline approaching\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The White House did not immediately confirm the Kremlin&#8217;s remarks, however, press secretary Jen Psaki said the two leaders agreed to have their teams &#8220;work urgently&#8221; to iron out the details of the extension before the treaty&#8217;s expiration date, February 5.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The New START\u00a0(Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty), was signed in 2010 by former US President Barack Obama and his Russian counterpart at the time, Dmitry Medvedev.<\/p>\n<p>The treaty limits each party to 700 deployed intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) or\u00a0deployed submarine-launched ballistic missiles (SLBMs),\u00a01,550 nuclear warheads on deployed ICBMs and SLBMs, and\u00a0800 deployed and non-deployed ICBM launchers.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It also envisions a rigorous inspection regime to verify compliance.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>The last nuclear arms control agreement\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Biden had indicated during his presidential campaign that he favored extending the treaty, and Russia has long proposed its extension without any conditions or changes.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>However, negotiations to extend the treaty were stalled by the administration of former US President Donald Trump, which insisted on tougher inspections for Russia and for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/china-warns-us-against-asia-missile-deployment\/a-49905220\">China\u00a0<\/a> to be included, which Beijing\u00a0refused.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>During Trump&#8217;s term, the US\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/russia-and-the-us-nuke-32-year-old-inf-treaty\/a-49863508\">withdrew\u00a0<\/a> from a separate nuclear weapons\u00a0control agreement with Russia, the\u2002<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/what-is-theinf-nuclear-treaty\/a-45981536\">Intermediate-Range\u2002Nuclear\u2002Forces\u2002(INF)\u2002<\/a> treaty, making New START the last\u00a0 remaining nuclear weapons control treaty between Russia and the US.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>DISARMAMENT &#038; SECURITY .
