Secretary-General\u00a0Ant\u00f3nio Guterres later\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sg\/en\/content\/sg\/statement\/2020-08-31\/statement-attributable-the-spokesperson-for-the-secretary-general-sudan\">described it\u00a0<\/a> as an &#8220;historic achievement&#8221; towards lasting peace.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Darfur.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Darfur.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"963\" height=\"603\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-21130\" srcset=\"https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Darfur.jpg 963w, https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Darfur-300x188.jpg 300w, https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Darfur-768x481.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 963px) 100vw, 963px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nUNAMID\/Albert Gonzalez Farran. UNAMID, in collaboration with the North Darfur Committee on Women, organised an open day session on UN Security Council Resolution 1325 on women, peace and security (file photo).<\/center><\/p>\n<p>Sudan\u2019s transitional Government initialled the deal alongside the Sudan Revolutionary Front (SRF) and Sudan Liberation Movement\u2013Minni Minnawi (SLM\/MM), at a ceremony held in neighbouring South Sudan.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Determination, courage and commitment\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Secretary-General congratulates the people of the Sudan for this historic achievement and commends the parties to the negotiations for their political will and determination in working toward the common objective of peace&#8221;, said the\u00a0statement released on Monday night in New York.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;He also thanks the Government of South Sudan and President Salva Kiir for their important role in facilitating the talks. The Secretary-General calls on the Sudan People\u2019s Liberation Movement\u2013North\u2013Abdelaziz Al-Hilu and the Sudan Liberation Movement\u2013Abdul Wahid Al-Nur to join the peace process.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>(Article continued in right column)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"float: right; width: 46%;\">Question for this article:<\/div>\n<div style=\"float: right; width: 46%;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"float: right; width: 46%;\">\n<p align=\"justify\">\n<p><em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/?p=14148\">Can peace be achieved in South Sudan?<\/a><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>(Article continued from left column)<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Guterres said he was\u00a0fully committed to supporting the implementation of the\u00a0agreement, &#8220;which marks the start of a new era for the people of the Sudan and for people living in Darfur and the Two Areas, in particular. This will require sustained commitment and collaboration between the parties and the people of the Sudan.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Earlier, Jeremiah Mamabolo, the\u00a0UNAMID\u00a0Joint Special Representative who attended the ceremony,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/unamid.unmissions.org\/unamid-jsr-welcomes-progress-sudanese-peace-talks\">said\u00a0<\/a> the deal was a\u00a0&#8220;significant step&#8221; and commended in particular the signatory parties for their &#8220;determination, courage and commitment to lasting peace in Sudan&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><strong>17 years of brutal fighting<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It is expected that the peace agreement will end 17 years of often brutal conflict in Darfur.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Fighting between the forces of former President Omar al-Bashir, backed by allied militia, and various rebel movements, left around 300,000 dead, according to UN estimates, and millions displaced.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>President al-Bashir was overthrown in April 2019 following unrest that began in December 2018.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u201cWe hope that this agreement is perceived as the start of a process that includes all in a positive move towards peace, justice and national unity. This includes the full realization of the hopes, dreams and aspirations of all the people of Sudan, including Darfuris\u201d, said Mr. Mamabolo.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Praise for South Sudan mediation\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>At the ceremony, the UNAMID chief conveyed greetings from UN\u00a0Secretary-General Ant\u00f3nio Guterres\u00a0and the AU Commission Chairperson, Moussa Faki.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He also applauded the South Sudanese mediation team for facilitating the negotiation process amidst challenges.\u00a0<br \/>\nMr. Mamabolo hoped that those parties who remain outside will soon join the peace process to fulfill the hopes and aspirations of the Sudanese people and the objectives of the December 2018 Revolution.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo that end, the United Nations and the African Union remain committed to supporting this process to the very last day of UNAMID\u2019s mandate\u201d, he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>DISARMAMENT &#038; SECURITY .
