WOMEN\u2019S EQUALITY . .<\/p>\n<p>An article from <a href=\"https:\/\/news.un.org\/en\/story\/2020\/07\/1068321\">UN News<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Although the COVID-19 pandemic has generated an unprecedented global health, humanitarian and development crisis, it has also revealed the power of women\u2019s leadership, according to the UN Deputy Secretary-General.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/webtv.un.org\/watch\/player\/6171106047001\"><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/women.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"702\" height=\"467\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-20778\" srcset=\"https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/women.jpg 702w, https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/women-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 702px) 100vw, 702px\" \/><br \/>\nGra\u00e7a Machel  in video from UN Web TV<\/a><\/center><\/p>\n<p>\u201cOver the past months, people around the world have come to see what many of us already knew: women\u2019s leadership makes a profound difference\u201d, Amina Mohammed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sg\/en\/content\/dsg\/statement\/2020-07-14\/deputy-secretary-generals-remarks-women-rise-for-all-virtual-event-prepared-for-delivery\">said <\/a> on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>In this devastating #COVID19 crisis we have an opportunity to hit the reset button, to deliver on the Decade of Action. This will only be possible when we recognize the value of women front and centre, together leading the way and rising for all.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe evidence has shown \u2014 in country after country \u2014 how governments led by women are more effective in flattening the curve and positioning for economic recovery.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ms. Mohammed was addressing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/coronavirus\/women-rise-for-all\">Women Rise for All<\/a>, a virtual gathering of influential women from across different regions, sectors and generations, to examine how their leadership is shaping pandemic response and recovery that benefits all people.<\/p>\n<p>(continued in right column)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"float: right; width: 46%;\"><strong><em>Question related to this article:<\/em><\/strong><\/div>\n<div style=\"float: right; width: 46%;\">\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n<em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/?p=20028\">How can we work together to overcome this medical and economic crisis?<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/?p=7610\">Do women have a special role to play in the peace movement?<\/a><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>(continued from left column).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe want to shape the way we define leadership. And ensure that we emerge from this pandemic with women leading, in equal numbers, and equal partnership\u201d, she explained.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2018Silver lining\u2019 in the crisis<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Women\u2019s proven leadership has emerged as a \u201csilver lining\u201d in the pandemic, one of the world\u2019s leading advocates for the rights of women and children told the gathering.<\/p>\n<p>Gra\u00e7a Machel believes it was no accident that countries with women Heads of State\u2014such as New Zealand, Germany, Finland and Taiwan\u2014have been comparatively successful in beating back the deadly new coronavirus.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis crisis has brought to light an undeniable truth: that the leadership of women is essential for us to effectively recreate the world\u2026that is more human-centred, that is more equal; a world in which such social justice is the goal\u201d, she said in her keynote address.<\/p>\n<p>For former Mozambican minister Ms. Machel, the pandemic must also lead to a re-examining of dominant value systems as the world cannot return to how it was prior to the crisis.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe must live on a planet where materialism, greed, inequalities no longer divide the human family\u201d, she stated.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Solidarity for all<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Women Rise for All was launched on social media in April, to support the UN Secretary-General\u2019s call for solidarity and urgent action during the pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>Even in the midst of this \u201cdevastating crisis\u201d, there is an opportunity to build a better world that works for all, according to Ms. Mohammed.<br \/>\n\u201cThat will only be possible when we recognize the value of women front and centre, together leading the way and rising for all\u201d, she said.<\/p>\n<p>(Thank you to Phyllis Kotite, the CPNN reporter for this article.)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>.
