Our world faces a common enemy: COVID-19.

\nThe virus does not care about nationality or ethnicity, faction or faith.\u00a0 It attacks all, relentlessly.
\n\u00a0
\nMeanwhile, armed conflict rages on around the world.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\nUN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres<\/center><\/p>\n

The most vulnerable \u2014 women and children, people with disabilities, the marginalized and the displaced \u2014 pay the highest price.
\n\u00a0
\nThey are also at the highest risk of suffering devastating losses from COVID-19.
\n\u00a0
\nLet\u2019s not forget that in war-ravaged countries, health systems have collapsed.
\n\u00a0
\nHealth professionals, already few in number, have often been targeted.
\n\u00a0
\nRefugees and others displaced by violent conflict are doubly vulnerable.
\n\u00a0
\nThe fury of the virus illustrates the folly of war.<\/p>\n

That is why today, I am calling for an immediate global ceasefire in all corners of the world.

\nIt is time to put armed conflict on lockdown and focus together on the true fight of our lives.
\n\u00a0
\nTo warring parties, I say:
\n\u00a0
\nPull back from hostilities.\u00a0
\n\u00a0
\nPut aside mistrust and animosity.
\n\u00a0
\nSilence the guns; stop the artillery; end the airstrikes.
\n\u00a0
\nThis is crucial\u2026
\n\u00a0
\nTo help create corridors for life-saving aid.
\n\u00a0
\nTo open precious windows for diplomacy.
\n\u00a0
\nTo bring hope to places among the most vulnerable to COVID-19.
\n\u00a0
\nLet us take inspiration from coalitions and dialogue slowly taking shape among rival parties in some parts to enable joint approaches to COVID-19.\u00a0 But we need much more.
\n\u00a0
\nEnd the sickness of war and fight the disease that is ravaging our world.
\n\u00a0
\nIt starts by stopping the fighting everywhere. Now.
\n\u00a0
\nThat is what our human family needs, now more than ever.<\/p>\n

(Note: The call by Guterres for a ceasefire has been applauded by the belligerents in the Yemen war <\/a> which gives hope for a ceasefire there.)
