DEMOCRATIC PARTICIPATION ..<\/p>\n<p>An article from the <a href=\"https:\/\/news.un.org\/en\/story\/2020\/02\/1057471\">United Nations News Service<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The premier\u00a0international\u00a0gathering on the future of cities\u00a0wrapped up\u00a0on Thursday\u00a0[February 13] in Abu Dhabi\u00a0with delegates\u00a0urging action\u00a0on\u00a0all aspects of\u00a0rapid urbanization,\u00a0recognizing that an increasingly urbanized world is a \u2018transformative force\u2019 that\u00a0can be harnessed and steered to boost sustainable development.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Dpi0Nz0u9k8&#038;feature=emb_logo\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/forum.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"660\" height=\"411\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-19693\" srcset=\"https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/forum.jpg 660w, https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/forum-300x187.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/><br \/>\nvideo of Forum<\/a><\/center><\/p>\n<p>The Tenth World Urban Forum (<a href=\"https:\/\/wuf.unhabitat.org\/\">WUF 10<\/a>), which attracted over 13,000 attendees taking part in more than 540 official events,\u00a0focused on the theme \u2018Cities of Opportunities: Connecting Culture and Innovation,\u2019\u00a0and called for united action to ensure a better future for cities and towns.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0outcome, known as the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/wuf.unhabitat.org\/sites\/default\/files\/2020-02\/WUF10_final_declared_actions.pdf\">Abu Dhabi Declared Actions<\/a>, includes commitments from international organizations, national, local and regional governments, the private sector, civil society, academia and others for the next two years and beyond to support the achievement of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/sustainable-development-goals\/\">Sustainable Development Goals\u00a0<\/a> (SDGs) agreed by world leaders in 2015.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;All three ingredients &#8211; culture, innovation and cities &#8211; are co-dependent and co-creating. Human settlements exist and excel on the dynamic mixture of cultures.&#8221; @MaimunahSharif  UNHabitat Executive Director puts into context the theme of #WUF10 at the closing ceremony<\/p>\n<p>Alongside their\u00a0declared actions, the\u00a0participants\u00a0hailed cities as\u00a0centres\u00a0of creativity and innovation,\u00a0as well as places with valuable cultural heritage and identity. And they were convinced that\u00a0\u2018culture is an integral part of the solution to the challenges of\u00a0urbanization\u00a0and achieving the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/habitat3.org\/the-new-urban-agenda\/\">New Urban Agenda<\/a>.\u2019\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>(Continued in right column)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"float: right; width: 46%;\">Questions for this article:<\/div>\n<div style=\"float: right; width: 46%;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"float: right; width: 46%;\">\n<p align=\"justify\">\n<p><em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/?p=7586\">How can culture of peace be developed at the municipal level?<\/a><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>(Continued from left column)<\/p>\n<p>Adopted\u00a0in Quito, Ecuador, in 2015\u00a0at the\u00a0UN conference known as\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/habitat3.org\/the-conference\/about-habitat-3\/\">Habitat\u00a0lll<\/a>,\u00a0the Agenda\u00a0represents a shared vision for a better and more sustainable future \u2013 one in which all people have equal rights and access to the benefits and opportunities that cities can offer, and in which the international community reconsiders the urban systems and physical form of urban spaces to achieve this.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>On Thursday,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/wuf.unhabitat.org\/wuf10-programme\/speakers\/maimunah-mohd-sharif\">Maimunah Mohd Sharif<\/a>, the Executive Director\u00a0of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/unhabitat.org\/\">UN-Habitat<\/a>, the UN agency that convenes the WUF,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/wuf.unhabitat.org\/worlds-premier-meeting-future-cities-ends-stirring-call-action\">told\u00a0<\/a> the Closing Ceremony that during six-day meeting, delegates from all walks of life had insisted on the importance of a common goal of leaving a legacy of a better world for future generations.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>All the SDGS came together in \u2018urban\u2019 goal\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sustainabledevelopment.un.org\/sdg11\">SDG 11\u00a0<\/a> aimed at achieving inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable\u00a0cities and human settlements, said Ms. Sharif, stressing that:\u00a0\u201cThrough the Abu Dhabi Declared Actions, we now have the what, how and when components as well.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/new.unhabitat.org\/\">UN-Habitat\u00a0<\/a>  Assembly President and Under-Secretary of Multilateral Affairs and Human Rights of Mexico, Martha Delgado, who co-chaired the Advisory Group which put together the WUF10 Abu Dhabi Declared Actions, said they had listened to participants thoughts, wishes and aspirations.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Executive Director of Strategic Affairs at Abu Dhabi\u2019s Department of Municipalities and Transport and General Coordinator of WUF10, Mohamed Al Khadar Al Ahmed, said their job with UN-Habitat was \u201cnot to only masterplan our cities we want to masterpiece our cities and that\u2019s a big difference.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Other speakers at the Closing Ceremony included\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/unctad.org\/en\/Pages\/About UNCTAD\/OSG\/Secretary-General.aspx\">Mukhisa Kituyi<\/a>,\u00a0the Secretary-General of the UN Conference on Trade and Development (<a href=\"http:\/\/unctad.org\/en\/Pages\/Home.aspx\">UNCTAD<\/a>),\u00a0who\u00a0stressed\u00a0the importance of bringing all sectors together to think afresh on overcoming challenges.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In\u00a0addition,\u00a0Fabrizio Hochschild Drummond,\u00a0the Special Advisor to the Secretary-General on Preparations for the\u00a075th\u00a0anniversary of the\u00a0United Nations\u00a0(UN75),\u00a0said it was inspirational to see the mixture of idealism, practical reflection, lessons learnt and suggestions for action.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In a video message,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/ga\/\">UN General Assembly\u00a0<\/a> President\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/pga\/74\/\">Tijjani Muhammad-Bande<\/a> \u00a0referred to the WUF10 theme,\u00a0saying:\u00a0\u201cWe must take urgent action to\u00a0utilize\u00a0culture and innovation as an accelerator of SDG implementation if we are to create a better world for all.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>..
