The June 11 meeting of foreign ministers and other high-level officials was hosted by Sweden as part of an initiative announced by Swedish Foreign Minister Margot Wallstr\u00f6m at the NPT preparatory committee meeting in May. (Photo: Claudio Bresciani\/AFP\/Getty Images)<br \/>\n<\/center><\/p>\n<p>The gradual downward trend of the global nuclear arsenal from its peak in 1986, should not be reversed,\u201d the officials proclaimed in a joint declaration. \u201cA potential nuclear arms race\u2014which would serve no one\u2019s interest\u2014must be avoided.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The participants represented non-nuclear, nonaligned countries, including Argentina, Ethiopia, Finland, Indonesia, Jordan, Kazakhstan, New Zealand, Sweden, and Switzerland, and nations that receive the cover of the U.S. nuclear umbrella, including Canada, Germany, Japan, the Netherlands, Norway, South Korea, and Spain.<\/p>\n<p>(Continued in right column)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"float: right; width: 46%;\">Question related to this article:<\/div>\n<div style=\"float: right; width: 46%;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"float: right; width: 46%;\">\n<p align=\"justify\">\n<p><em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/?p=5035\">Can we abolish all nuclear weapons?<\/a> <\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>(Continued from left column)<\/p>\n<p>Their statement emphasized the importance of reaffirming the role of the NPT as \u201cthe cornerstone of the global disarmament and nonproliferation regime\u201d and stressed the necessity of increased progress on the disarmament pillar of the treaty.<\/p>\n<p>Toward that end, the ministers declared that they will seek an outcome at the 2020 NPT Review Conference that will identify \u201cstepping stones\u201d for the implementation of the NPT disarmament obligations, which commit the treaty\u2019s five nuclear-weapon states to \u201cpursue negotiations in good faith\u201d to end the nuclear arms race and to achieve nuclear disarmament.<\/p>\n<p>The officials highlighted concrete measures that could be taken to advance disarmament, as previously presented in a Swedish working paper, including more transparent declaratory policies, measures to reduce the role of nuclear weapons in doctrines, strengthening negative security assurance, working on nuclear disarmament verification, and addressing the production of fissile material.<\/p>\n<p>Sweden first submitted the working paper to the NPT preparatory committee meeting in April. The United States also has pursued an initiative ahead of the review conference, titled \u201cCreating an Environment for Nuclear Disarmament\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Citing the need to identify common ground on disarmament, Wallstr\u00f6m told the May NPT meeting that \u201cthe NPT community cannot come empty-handed next year\u201d for the review conference. The process laid out in the working paper could help to build trust and confidence and \u201cunlock current diplomatic blockages,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>DISARMAMENT &#038; SECURITY .
