Abiy Ahmed Ali, Prime Minister of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, is named\u00a0as laureate of the 2019 edition of the F\u00e9lix Houphou\u00ebt-Boigny Peace Prize for his actions in the region and, in particular,\u00a0for having been the instigator of a peace agreement between the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia and Eritrea.<\/p>\n

The jury also recognizes the laureate’s worthiness for the reforms undertaken to consolidate democracy and social cohesion. Finally, the jury considers this distinction as an encouragement to\u00a0pursue his\u00a0commitment to the promotion of a culture of peace in the region and\u00a0across the African continent.<\/p>\n

The Jury met on 29 April at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris to designate the laureate of the 2019 edition of the prize, which will mark the 30th anniversary of\u00a0its inception.<\/p>\n

The jury was composed of Mrs. Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Former President of Liberia\u00a0and\u00a0Nobel Peace Laureate (2011), Mr Fran\u00e7ois Hollande, Former President of France, Princess Sumaya\u00a0bint El Hassan of Jordan – UNESCO Special Envoy for science for peace,\u00a0Mr\u00a0Michel\u00a0Camdessus\u00a0(France) – Former Director General of the International Monetary Fund (IMF)\u00a0and Professor\u00a0Muhammad Yunus (Bangladesh),\u00a0founder of\u00a0Grameen\u00a0Bank – Nobel Peace Laureate (2006) and\u00a0Mr.\u00a0Forest Whitaker (United States of America),\u00a0founder of the Peace and Development Initiative.<\/p>\n

In 1989, in order to pay tribute to President F\u00e9lix Houphouet-Boigny\u2019s action for peace in the world, 120 countries sponsored\u00a0a resolution unanimously adopted by UNESCO’s Member States\u00a0to establish the \u00a0F\u00e9lix Houphou\u00ebt-Boigny Prize – UNESCO Peace Prize<\/a>.\u00a0The Prize\u00a0is intended\u00a0to\u00a0honor\u00a0living\u00a0individuals and active public or private institutions or bodies that have made a significant contribution to promoting, seeking, safeguarding or maintaining peace in conformity with the Charter of the United Nations and the Constitution of UNESCO.<\/p>\n

Audrey Azoulay, Director-General of UNESCO, on an official visit to Ethiopia on 2 and 3 May on the occasion of World Press Freedom Day, will meet with the Prime Minister and convey her warm congratulations.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
