Thousands of women in India’s coastal\u00a0state\u00a0of Kerala joined together,\u00a0forming a 386-mile wall, to send a message in support of gender equality.<\/p>\n

Official sources told the BBC that approximately five\u00a0million women from different parts of Kerala took to highways to form a human\u00a0chain\u00a0in protest of gender\u00a0disparity.<\/p>\n

The \u201cwomen\u2019s wall\u201d stretched\u00a0from the capital city of Thiruvananthapuram to the northern district of Kasaragod.<\/p>\n

The demonstration is part of a series of\u00a0protests against a ban\u00a0<\/a> which prevents\u00a0women of \u201cmenstruating age\u201d (ages 10 to 50) to enter the temple.\u00a0India\u2019s Supreme Court\u00a0had overturned the\u00a0ban back in September, however, attacks\u00a0on female\u00a0visitors\u00a0by conservative groups persist, citing\u00a0a violation of\u00a0the holy site.<\/p>\n

Last month, two women tried to enter the temple but were prevented from doing so by protesters defending the ban.\u00a0Right-wing Hindu protesters base their actions on an interpretation of a temple deity, Lord Ayyappa whom they allege is \u201ccelibate.\u201d<\/p>\n

The\u00a0“women’s wall”\u00a0was initially proposed by Kerala\u2019s Left Front Government and was originally scheduled to take place in December 2018.
\nIn November 2018,\u00a0dozens of protesters\u00a0at\u00a0the Sabarimala Temple were arrested for\u00a0demanding\u00a0the\u00a0removal\u00a0of a ban\u00a0on overnight stays, which was implemented by the government as a response to\u00a0right-wing demonstrations\u00a0against women devotees<\/a>.<\/p>\n

However, since the court order gained\u00a0prominence, a major battleground\u00a0has manifested between devotees and gender activists, sparking protests across the southern state. More than 2,000 people were arrested following\u00a0clashes\u00a0near\u00a0the temple in October.
\n<\/p>\n

The Supreme Court will hear challenges\u00a0<\/a> to the\u00a0decision to overturn the ban,\u00a0starting\u00a0January 22.<\/p>\n
