{"id":14961,"date":"2019-01-29T12:17:06","date_gmt":"2019-01-29T17:17:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/?p=14961"},"modified":"2019-01-29T12:17:06","modified_gmt":"2019-01-29T17:17:06","slug":"west-africa-stakeholders-call-for-support-of-the-ecowas-conflict-prevention-framework","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/?p=14961","title":{"rendered":"West Africa: Stakeholders call for support of the ECOWAS Conflict Prevention Framework"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"float: left; width: 46%;\">\n<p>&#8230; EDUCATION FOR PEACE &#8230;<\/p>\n<p>An article from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ecowas.int\/stakeholders-call-for-support-of-the-ecowas-conflict-prevention-framework\/\">ECOWAS, Economic Community of West African States<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Plans of Action (PoA) of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS)\u2019 Conflict Prevention Framework (ECPF) were launched on the 28th\u00a0of January 2019 at the ECOWAS Commission headquarters, in Abuja, Nigeria.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/ECOWAS.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/ECOWAS.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"443\" height=\"316\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-14962\" srcset=\"https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/ECOWAS.jpg 443w, https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/ECOWAS-300x214.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 443px) 100vw, 443px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nofficials cutting the ribbon for the launch<\/center><\/p>\n<p>The Framework\u2019s 15 Components with peace-building mechanisms, provide, among others, tools for strengthening regional and national capacities for preventing violent conflicts or their recurrence in the region.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\nIn his opening statement at the event, the ECOWAS Commission\u2019s Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security General Francis B\u00e9hanzin noted that the ECPF was established for the realization of the dream of a stable and secured West African region with strong democratic institutions, resilient border security and an environment conducive to economic growth and productivity.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\nCalling for the support and collective ownership of the Framework, Commissioner B\u00e9hanzin maintained that the ideal of a peaceful, progressive and prosperous region had been the main motivation of the ECOWAS Mediation and Security Council when it adopted the ECPF in 2008.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\nAccording to him, beyond the ECOWAS Commission and Member States, conflict prevention is the responsibility of the citizens of the community, civil society activists, academics, civil servants and the international community including Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Diplomatic Missions.<\/p>\n<p>(Continued in right column)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"float: right; width: 46%;\">Question for this article:<\/div>\n<div style=\"float: right; width: 46%;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"float: right; width: 46%;\">\n<p align=\"justify\">\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/?p=6439\">Where is peace education taking place?<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>(Continued from left column)<\/p>\n<p>As adopted, the ECPF is to operationalize the 1999 Protocol on the Mechanism for Conflict Prevention, Management, Resolution, Peacekeeping and security. General B\u00e9hanzin stressed in this regard that the Framework is to \u201cserve as a guiding reference for the ECOWAS Member states to strengthen human security in the region\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Introducing the broad objectives of the Framework, the Director of Political Affairs of the ECOWAS Commission, Dr. Remi Ajibewa remarked that what has been birthed is a solid platform for channeling partners\u2019 cooperation to ensure stable, peaceful and more prosperous West Africa while enabling ECOWAS to consolidate on the peace building gains made so far.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\nThe Charge d\u2019Affairs of the embassy of Switzerland in Nigeria Mrs Anne-Beatrice Bullinger held that the new and comprehensive ECPF Action Plans represent a very important step forward towards \u201ca coherent, coordinated, complementary and effective implementation of the Framework by ECOWAS, its Member States and the civil society\u201d<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\nThe Danish ambassador to Nigeria Mr. Jesper Kamp stressed that the government Denmark is supporting the ECPF processes in keeping faith with the strides of the regional community as an \u201cindispensable organization for peace, security and governance across West Africa.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\nAmbassador Kamp said further that the planned activities \u201cprovide a platform for youth as well as women.
