Bonnie Mendes, a Pakistani Catholic priest of Faisalabad, former regional coordinator of Caritas Asia, reported January 8, 2019, by Fides News Agency. He commented on the publication of the \u201cIslamabad Declaration\u201d, in which over 500 Muslim religious leaders publicly condemn terrorism, violence committed in the name of religion and fatwa (sacred edicts) widespread by radical ulemas.<\/p>\n<p>The declaration was signed in Islamabad, the capital of Pakistan, during a gathering organized by the Pakistan Ulema Council (PUC). The initiative, according to observers, represents a turning point especially in the attitude towards religious minorities and Islamic sects the \u201cAhmadi\u201d. In fact, the Declaration recognizes that Pakistan is a multi-ethnic and multi-religious country, and notes that \u201cit is the responsibility of the government to ensure the protection of the life of non-Muslim citizens in Pakistan\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>(Article continued in the right column)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"float: right; width: 46%;\">Question for this article<\/div>\n<div style=\"float: right; width: 46%;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"float: right; width: 46%;\">\n<p align=\"justify\">\n<p><em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/?p=3134\">Islamic extremism, how should it be opposed?<\/a><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>(Article continued from the left column)<\/p>\n<p>Among the main contents, the murders committed \u201cunder the pretext of religious belief\u201d are condemned, observing that this \u201cis contrary to the teachings of Islam\u201d and states that \u201cno Islamic sect must be declared unfaithful\u201d, noting that all citizens, whatever their religion or sect, \u201chave the constitutional right to live in the country following their cultural and religious principles\u201d. Continuing in establishing the principles of religious freedom, the text establishes the right for religious groups to organize themselves autonomously and asks civil authorities to ban \u201cany material (books, pamphlets, audio) that incites religious hatred\u201d and to punish anyone that threatens \u201cthe sacred places of non-Muslims\u201d, implementing \u201cthe national action plan against extremism\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The religious proclaim 2019 as a \u201cYear to annihilate terrorism, extremism and sectarian violence from Pakistan\u201d, reiterating that \u201cnon-Muslim citizens must enjoy the same rights as everyone else\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Sabir Michael, an activist for human rights and minority rights, told Fides: \u201cWe appreciate and acknowledge the efforts of the Pakistan Ulema Council (PUC) to stop extremism and contribute to tolerance, peace, justice, and equality in society. It is necessary to promote and spread this message to the communities.
