As she considered how to help, she said she \u201cdecided to go draw portraits.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/caravan-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/caravan-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1230\" height=\"749\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-14213\" srcset=\"https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/caravan-2.jpg 1230w, https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/caravan-2-300x183.jpg 300w, https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/caravan-2-768x468.jpg 768w, https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/caravan-2-1024x624.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1230px) 100vw, 1230px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n(Click on the photo to enlarge)<\/center><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was hilarious, delightful, and the joy and courage of this crew is truly contagious,\u201d Baily told HuffPost.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>President\u00a0Donald Trump\u00a0has been claiming the caravan is an invasion, filled with\u00a0terrorists, gang members and drug dealers. But Baily\u2019s drawings show the worn but hopeful faces of people in the midst of an epic trek from poverty and violence in their home countries to the U.S., where many\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/10\/23\/world\/americas\/migrant-caravan-mexico-trump.html\">aim to apply for asylum<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Trump, whose campaigning ahead of last week\u2019s elections relied on fear of the migrants, ordered more than\u00a07,000 active-duty troops to the border\u00a0to deter asylum-seekers. He has been silent\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2018\/11\/08\/before-midterms-trump-harped-migrant-caravan-since-then-he-has-barely-mentioned-it\/?utm_term=.6ae4ca60d159\">on the topic on social media\u00a0<\/a> since the election.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Their story \u201cfelt too mythical to be real,\u201d Baily said via email, and she \u201chad to meet these people.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>(Article continued in right column)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"float: right; width: 46%;\">Question for this article<\/div>\n<div style=\"float: right; width: 46%;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"float: right; width: 46%;\">\n<p align=\"justify\">\n<p><em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/?p=4506\">The refugee crisis, Who is responsible?<\/a><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>(Article continued from left column)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think the bravest people on this journey are the mothers and children,\u201d Baily said. News coverage, she added, \u201cpaints a very different picture of what I saw in my time spent at the camp.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cImages of desperation, exhaustion, and suffering dominate a lot of the reports, when the reality is, there is actually a lot of joy,\u201d she said. \u201cThis journey they are on is indeed hard-core. But imagine the conditions that someone leaves behind. I think there is a certain sense of freedom that comes with this decision.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mexico City officials turned a stadium into a camp where the migrants could pause on their journey, and \u201coffered them every type of city service,\u201d according to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/11\/10\/world\/americas\/migrant-caravan-mexico-city.html\">The New York Times<\/a>.\u00a0Doctors and dentists provided free checkups.<\/p>\n<p>The caravan departed on Saturday morning to continue the walk north.<\/p>\n<p>Baily said 25-year-old Jean Carlos told her he\u2019s from Choloma, Honduras, worked in a bodega, goes to church every Sunday, loves to drive, and one day hopes to own a Mazda. He\u2019s heading to Canada with cans of tuna in his pocket.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Two young girls, Lincy and Nataly, are traveling with their mother, father, and 1-month old brother, who was born in Honduras just before they left. Lincy told Baily that she hates brushing her hair. Nataly loves to draw.<\/p>\n<p>The family told Baily that traveling has been hard,\u00a0but \u201cso many families on the caravan together have created a great support system.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Baily also spoke with a barber named Osman, whose friends call him the \u201cTalento Catracho,\u201d or the local Honduran talent. He told her he\u2019s walking \u201cbecause he wants to be able to support himself with his craft, without fearing the mafia system taking over Honduras.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSitting with someone to do their portrait is a very personal exchange,\u201d Baily said.
