{"id":14161,"date":"2018-11-07T07:49:47","date_gmt":"2018-11-07T12:49:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/?p=14161"},"modified":"2019-12-22T12:01:10","modified_gmt":"2019-12-22T17:01:10","slug":"usa-marquette-university-center-for-peacemaking-celebrates-10-years","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/?p=14161","title":{"rendered":"USA: Marquette University Center for Peacemaking celebrates 10 years"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"float: left; width: 46%;\">\n<p>&#8230; EDUCATION FOR PEACE &#8230;<\/p>\n<p>An article by Donna Sarkar for the <a href=\"https:\/\/marquettewire.org\/3995776\/news\/center-for-peacemaking-celebrates-10-years\/\">Marquette Wire<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Center for Peacemaking celebrated its 10-year anniversary\u00a0Sept. 13 at the Haggerty Museum of Art, marking a decade of exploring the power of nonviolence.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/OKcy-d-Aki4\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Marquette.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"631\" height=\"435\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-14162\" srcset=\"https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Marquette.jpg 631w, https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Marquette-300x207.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 631px) 100vw, 631px\" \/><br \/>\nVideo of anniversary event<\/a><br \/>\n<\/center><\/p>\n<p>A reception featured speeches from founders of the center as well as members of the board of directors.\u00a0A $1 million grant\u00a0was announced during the ceremony to continue development work in the community.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Center for Peacemaking was founded in 2008 through the vision of Marquette alumni Terry and Sally Rynne.\u00a0The center operates several programs for students that support research promoting peace and nonviolence.\u00a0It is the only such center on a Catholic university campus in the United States, Terry Rynne said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Patrick Kennelly, director of the center and a Marquette University alumnus, said the center\u2019s impact is clear.\u00a0\u201cPeace education has transformed the lives of Marquette students, and Marquette peacemaking initiatives have addressed indignities and communities locally and around the globe,\u201d Kennelly said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Zoe Gunderson, a junior in the College of Communication said she recently started working at the Center for Peacemaking as a communications assistant.\u00a0 She said she noticed the welcoming atmosphere right away.<\/p>\n<p>(Article continued in right column.)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"float: right; width: 46%;\">Questions for this article:<\/div>\n<div style=\"float: right; width: 46%;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"float: right; width: 46%;\">\n<p align=\"justify\">\n<p><em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/?p=6439\">Where is peace education taking place?<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/?p=18710\">University campus peace centers, What is happening on your campus?<\/a><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>(Article continued from left column.)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe students involved seem to be really dedicated and passionate about nonviolence movements and other related issues, and I\u2019m really glad I joined,\u201d Gunderson said.<\/p>\n<p>The center also works to recruit students and build curriculum for the peace studies major and minor offered in the College of Arts &#038; Sciences.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUndergraduate time is a place where students can change new things,\u201d Terry said.\u00a0\u201cIt\u2019s our call as Christians to help serve students and the power of nonviolence is just so wonderful. The number of students involved grows exponentially each year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>During the ceremony, the center recognized its partnership with Catholic Relief Services, the official international humanitarian agency of the Catholic community in the United States.\u00a0 It gives students and faculty access to the agency\u2019s international projects, experts and resources.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Ellie Lyne, a senior in the College of Arts &#038; Sciences and a research assistant on the Park Initiative project, which promotes reducing crime in the Near West Side neighborhoods, said learning about the power of nonviolence is beneficial and the center has taught her how to have tangible impacts on the community.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve also worked with professors over the summer to research how to solve domestic violence and eviction in Milwaukee, and we are close to reaching some answers,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Kennelly said he has witnessed graduates of the peace studies program working around the globe using skills of nonviolence learned at Marquette to address indignities and solve dense social issues.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur faith calls us to show love to one another and our enemies in times of crisis,\u201d Kennelly said. \u201cThat is the mission I hope students (take away).\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&#8230; EDUCATION FOR PEACE &#8230; An article by Donna Sarkar for the Marquette Wire The Center for Peacemaking celebrated its 10-year anniversary\u00a0Sept. 13 at the Haggerty Museum of Art, marking a decade of exploring the power of nonviolence.
