WOMEN&#8217;S EQUALITY .<\/p>\n<p>An article from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.weforum.org\/agenda\/2018\/10\/women-in-iceland-have-walked-out-of-work-to-dispute-the-gender-pay-gap\/\">World Economic Forum<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Imagine if you worked a full day but stopped being paid at 2.55pm.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s the fate of women in Iceland, according to a protest group that\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/kvennafri.is\/en\/kvennafri-2018-en\/\">organized rallies\u00a0<\/a> across the country this week [October 21-27], demanding equal pay and rights and declaring \u201cDon\u2019t Change Women, Change the World!\u201d<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Iceland.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Iceland.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"454\" height=\"360\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-14021\" srcset=\"https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Iceland.jpg 454w, https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Iceland-300x238.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 454px) 100vw, 454px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nThe sitting Prime Minister of Iceland, Katrin Jakobsdottir, joined the demonstration, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2018-10-24\/iceland-s-prime-minister-joins-women-s-equal-pay-walk-out\">the Bloomberg News Service.<\/a><\/center><\/p>\n<p>While the protestors at \u2018Kvennafr\u00ed 2018\u2019, Women\u2019s Strike, acknowledge that Iceland has made progress &#8211; it has the smallest overall gender gap of 144 countries\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.weforum.org\/reports\/the-global-gender-gap-report-2017\">ranked\u00a0<\/a> by the World Economic Forum and has enacted the world\u2019s first\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.government.is\/topics\/human-rights-and-equality\/equal-pay-certification\/\">equal pay\u00a0<\/a> law &#8211; they say they want faster and more meaningful progress.<\/p>\n<p>(Article continued in right column)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"float: right; width: 46%;\"><strong><em>Question for this article<\/em><\/strong><\/div>\n<div style=\"float: right; width: 46%;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"float: right; width: 46%;\">\n<p align=\"justify\">\n<p><strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/?p=9166\">Prospects for progress in women&#8217;s equality, what are the short and long term prospects?<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>(Article continued from left column)<\/p>\n<p>Demonstrations were held in 16 towns and cities and the largest was in Reykjav\u00edk, where female musicians, poets, actresses and a 230-strong choir performed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPay discrimination is wage-theft,\u201d J\u00f3hanna Sigur\u00f0ard\u00f3ttir, former Prime Minister of Iceland\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/kvennafri.is\/en\/summaries-kvennafri-2018\/\">told the rally<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Finding a voice<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Social media is creating a wave of protest where women are speaking out, repeating\u00a0#MeToo and telling the world that they have had enough.<\/p>\n<p>That underscores the themes in the Forum\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.weforum.org\/reports\/the-global-gender-gap-report-2017\">Global Gender Gap Report 2017<\/a>, which estimated it will\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/dWpszEzmmzw\">take another 100 years\u00a0<\/a> to achieve gender parity at the current rate of change and 217 years to close the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/reports.weforum.org\/global-gender-gap-report-2017\/shareable-infographics\/?doing_wp_cron=1540457473.4396169185638427734375\">economic gender gap<\/a>. The 2018 report is due for publication in December.<\/p>\n<p>Such themes have also been highlighted on social media via campaigns including\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.shondaland.com\/act\/a21239255\/timesup-metoo-and-the-global-movement-for-womens-rights\/\">#TimesUp\u00a0<\/a> and #MeToo and the Forum\u2019s ongoing work shows how addressing these issues is more than an ethical or moral concern.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGender parity is also fundamental to whether and how economies and societies thrive,\u201d the report said. \u201cA variety of models and empirical studies have suggested that improving gender parity may result in significant economic dividends.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Iceland has the smallest\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.weforum.org\/agenda\/2017\/11\/why-iceland-ranks-first-gender-equality\">gender gap<\/a>, according to the Forum\u2019s report, which focuses on four areas: Economic Participation and Opportunity, Educational Attainment, Health and Survival, and Political Empowerment.
