The Board of Directors of the\u00a0US Peace Memorial Foundation <\/a>\u00a0has\u00a0voted unanimously to award its\u00a02018 Peace Prize\u00a0to\u00a0The Honorable\u00a0David Swanson\u00a0\u201cwhose inspiring antiwar leadership, writings, strategies, and organizations help to create a culture of peace.\u201d<\/p>\n

Michael Knox, Chair of the Foundation,\u00a0presented the award on\u00a0August 26 at the\u00a0Veterans\u00a0For\u00a0Peace\u00a033rd Annual Convention held in St. Paul, MN.<\/p>\n

In his remarks, Knox said,\u00a0\u201cThank you, David, for dedicating your life to ending wars.\u00a0\u00a0You are one of the most prolific writers, speakers, activists, and organizers for peace.\u00a0\u00a0The breadth of your work is staggering.\u00a0\u00a0You have enlightened us with books that are in the forefront of modern antiwar thought;\u00a0and with speeches, debates, conferences, blogs, billboards, radio shows, online courses,\u00a0videos, websites, and more innovative ideas than we can name.\u00a0 We want you to know that your efforts are greatly appreciated, here and around the world.\u201d<\/p>\n

Upon learning of the award, David said, \u201cThis wonderful honor is\u00a0definitely having\u00a0the impact on me that I imagine is intended, namely it is inspiring me to keep at it and work harder to advance the abolition of war and the development of peaceful behaviors and institutions.\u00a0\u00a0Thank you for the pat on the back but also for the kick in the rear.\u00a0\u00a0We have\u00a0a long ways\u00a0yet to go.\u201d<\/p>\n

In addition to receiving the 2018 Peace Prize, our highest honor, Swanson has been designated a\u00a0 Founding Member\u00a0<\/a> of the\u00a0US Peace Memorial Foundation.\u00a0\u00a0He joins previous\u00a0Peace Prize\u00a0<\/a> recipients Ann Wright,\u00a0Veterans\u00a0For\u00a0Peace,\u00a0Kathy Kelly,\u00a0CODEPINK Women for Peace, Chelsea Manning, Medea Benjamin, Noam Chomsky, Dennis Kucinich, and Cindy Sheehan.\u00a0 Nominees considered by the Board in 2018 included\u00a0Daniel Ellsberg,\u00a0Nancy\u00a0Mancias,\u00a0Colman McCarthy,\u00a0Sharon\u00a0Tennison,\u00a0Sally-Alice Thompson, and\u00a0S.
