May 24 was also Women&#8217;s International Day for Peace and Disarmament. PNND women leaders used the occasion to release an appeal Common security for a sustainable and nuclear-weapon-free world.<\/p>\n<p>Governments must make better use of diplomacy, international law and common security mechanisms in order to prevent war and adequately address climate change and nuclear threats, according to an international appeal released in Geneva on May 24, 2018 by women parliamentarians from around the world.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/PNND-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/PNND-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"891\" height=\"526\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-12793\" srcset=\"https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/PNND-1.jpg 891w, https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/PNND-1-300x177.jpg 300w, https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/PNND-1-768x453.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 891px) 100vw, 891px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nPhoto montage: Endorsers of the appeal released on May 24, Women&#8217;s International Day for Peace and Disarmament (click on image to enlarge)<br \/>\n<\/center><\/p>\n<p>The appeal,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/unfoldzero.us12.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=b24250dac623a8bc5da1b0664&#038;id=af010252f4&#038;e=f45f0916e9\">Common security for a sustainable and nuclear-weapon-free world<\/a>, was released to commemorate\u00a0Women\u2019s International Day for Peace and Disarmament\u00a0and to give support to <a href=\"https:\/\/unfoldzero.us12.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=b24250dac623a8bc5da1b0664&#038;id=24303cf1e2&#038;e=f45f0916e9\">\u00a0Securing our Common Future: An Agenda for Disarmament<\/a>, the new disarmament agenda released in Geneva on May 24 by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018We are deeply concerned about the existential threats to humanity and the environment from climate change, nuclear weapons and unresolved international conflicts, especially those between nuclear-reliant\u00a0countries,\u2019 said\u00a0Dr Hedy Fry, MP\u00a0(Canada), Co-Chair of the Canada Section of\u00a0PNND and Special Representative on Gender Issues for the Parliamentary Assembly of the\u00a0Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE).<\/p>\n<p>\u2018The withdrawal by the United States from the Iran Nuclear deal and the cancellation of the US\/North Korea Summit only adds to these concerns,\u2019\u00a0says Dr Fry. \u2018As such, we welcome\u00a0the peace and security initiative launched today by the United Nations Secretary-General \u2013 to \u201cpursue disarmament to save humanity, disarmament that saves lives and disarmament for future generations.\u201d \u2018<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;The increased threats of nuclear-weapons-use by accident, miscalculation or intent led the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists earlier this year to move the hands of the Doomsday Clock to 2 Minutes to\u00a0Midnight,&#8217;\u00a0says\u00a0Margret Kiener Nellen MP\u00a0(Switzerland),\u00a0President of the Swiss delegation to\u00a0the OSCE\u00a0Parliamentary Assembly.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Nuclear reliant governments must reverse these trends by taking all weapons systems off high alert, committing to never use nuclear weapons first, and commencing negotiations on the complete prohibition and elimination of nuclear weapons, as\u00a0<a href-\"http:\/\/www.pnnd.org\/article\/osce-parliamentary-assembly-calls-nuclear-weapons-stand-down\">urged by the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly.<\/a>\u2019<\/p>\n<p>The appeal calls on governments, parliaments and civil society to act together to implement these goals.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;I have joined other women parliamentarians in expressing support for the UN General Assembly&#8217;s decision for a high-level conference on disarmament to advance effective measures to build a framework for a nuclear weapon-free world,&#8217; says\u00a0Linda Duncan MP\u00a0(Canada), Co-Chair of PNND Canada.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;As women representatives, we are proud of our home countries and our national identities, but we also recognize a common humanity. We recognize the need to collaborate in building a peaceful, secure, sustainable, and just world.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>(Continued in right column)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"float: right; width: 46%;\">Question related to this article:<\/div>\n<div style=\"float: right; width: 46%;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"float: right; width: 46%;\">\n<p align=\"justify\">\n<p><em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/?p=5035\">Can we abolish all nuclear weapons?<\/a> <\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>(Continued from left column)<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Those\u00a0countries that still rely on nuclear weapons for their security should phase out nuclear deterrence, replacing it with international law, common security mechanisms and verified multilateral disarmament,&#8217; says\u00a0\u00a0Baroness Sue Miller\u00a0(UK),\u00a0PNND\u00a0Co-President.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018The United Nations was established with an array of mechanisms through which nations can resolve conflicts, negotiate disarmament and achieve security through diplomacy not war,\u2019 says\u00a0Baroness Miller.\u00a0\u2018These have been supplemented by additional common security mechanisms such as the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.osce.org\/\">Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe<\/a>. A better use of these mechanisms could help facilitate nuclear disarmament.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;The first step is for all nuclear-reliant states to implement the call of the UN Secretary-General to \u201censure that the 72-year practice of the non-use of nuclear weapons continues indefinitely and is universally understood to be an inviolable norm,\u201d says\u00a0Alyn Ware, PNND Global Coordinator.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018The non-nuclear countries have made an important complementary action to this by negotiating last year a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/disarmament.un.org\/treaties\/t\/tpnw\/text\">Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons<\/a>.\u00a0We look forward to ratification and entry into force of this treaty.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u2018In addition, the nuclear arms race costs over $100 billion annually,\u2019 says\u00a0Ute Finckh-Kr\u00e4mer\u00a0(Germany), former Deputy-Chair of the Bundestag Subcommittee on Disarmament and Arms Control.\u00a0\u00a0\u2018These resources could be\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nuclearweaponsmoney.org\/opportunity-costs\/\">better used\u00a0<\/a> to\u00a0reverse climate change, eliminate poverty and fulfill other social and economic needs.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Cities, kantons\/states and federal governments in non-nuclear States can play a role in this by ending any investments they may have in corporations manufacturing nuclear weapons and their delivery systems,&#8217;\u00a0says\u00a0Barbara Gysi MP\u00a0(Switzerland).\u00a0 &#8216;Already some local, regional and national governments have\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nuclearweaponsmoney.org\/legislation\/\">taken such action<\/a>.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u2018The condition of our world is calling for a new \u201eEntspannungspolitik\u201c, says\u00a0Uta Zapf\u00a0(Germany), PNND Past President and former Chair of the Bundestag Subcommitte on Disarmament and Arms Control.\u00a0 \u2018The new peace and security initiative of UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres arrives at the right moment.
