REVIEW OF 2017 . .<\/big><\/em><\/center><\/p>\n<div style=\"float: left; width: 46%;\">\n<p align=\"justify\">\nAs we finish the year 2017 we can see continued progress in all areas of the culture of peace.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">\nThe struggle to stop violence against women was more pronounced than ever this year, as described in the <a href=\"https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/?p=11165\">December bulletin<\/a>, devoted to the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.  This month the mobilization was continued in the 16 days of activism with examples, from  <a href=\"https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/?p=11178\">Senegal<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/?p=11174\">Burundi,<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/?p=11213\">Canada<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/?p=11189\">Colombia<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/?p=11227\">Honduras<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/?p=11308\">Yemen<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/?p=11312\">Australia<\/a>, among others and a <a href=\"https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/?p=11346\">major effort by education unions<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">\nWe begin to see the possibility of nuclear disarmament as a result of progress at the United Nations in 2017 as a result of important initiatives of the civil society, as described in the bulletins of <a href=\"https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/?p=9693\">June,<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/?p=9983\">July<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/?p=10178\">August<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/?p=10935\">November<\/a>, and marked by the <a href=\"https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/?p=11320\">Nobel Prize for Peace<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">\nThe <a href=\"https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/?p=11384\">decision by the World Bank<\/a> to halt investment in exploration for fossil fuels is the latest in many important disinvestment initiatives last year.  Along with the progress in renewable energy, this begins to allow us to escape from the climate warming caused by fossil fuels, as demanded by the climate marches of Earthday described in our <a href=\"https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/?p=9508\">bulletin of May<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">\nIn our <a href=\"https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/?p=9069\">bulletin of March<\/a>, we reviewed mass mobilizations that have supported democratic participation.  A recent study, reviewed in <a href=\"https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/?p=11392\"> an article we published last month<\/a>, shows that such mobilizations have a measurable effect in both the short term and the long term.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"float: right; width: 46%;\">\n<p align=\"justify\">\nAs for actors, the United Nations continued to play a key role for a culture of peace, as featured in our <a href=\"https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/?p=8882\">February bulletin<\/a> and as marked last month by its <a href=\"https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/?p=11409\">annual culture of peace resolution<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">\nAs we have seen in recent years, and featured in our bulletins of <a href=\"https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/?p=9983\">July<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/?p=10336\">September<\/a>, a leading role for the culture of peace continues to be played by Latin America.  In December we carried articles from <a href=\"https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/?p=11352\">Ecuador<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/?p=11254\">Mexico<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/?p=11261\">Brazil<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/?p=11244\">Colombia<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/?p=11207\">Honduras<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">\nCelebrations of the International Day of Peace continue to grow around the world.  <a href=\"https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/?p=10613\">This year<\/a>, we found 562 events listed on the internet, much more than the 182 that we were able to find <a href=\"https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/?p=7124\">in 2016<\/a>.    It is especially remarkable that the events this year came more or less evenly from all regions:<br \/>\n<br \/>\n128 in <a href=\"https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/?p=10592\">North America<\/a><br \/>\n104 in <a href=\"https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/?p=10559\">the former Soviet Union<\/a><br \/>\n96 in <a href=\"https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/?p=10579\">Europe<\/a><br \/>\n81 in <a href=\"https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/?p=10476\">sub-Saharan Africa<\/a><br \/>\n67 in <a href=\"https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/?p=10567\">Asia<\/a><br \/>\n58 in <a href=\"https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/?p=10542\">Latin America and the Caribbean<\/a><br \/>\n28 in <a href=\"https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/?p=10550\">the Middle East and Arab States<\/p>\n<p><\/a><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">\nAs described in our <a href=\"https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/?p=10680\">October bulletin<\/a> the celebrations of the International Day of Peace were often led by children.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"> In sum, we see the continued development of anti-war consciousness and recognition of the need for a culture of peace.
