WOMEN&#8217;S EQUALITY . . <\/p>\n<p>An article from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/entry\/the-me-too-campaign-was-created-by-a-black-woman-10-years-ago_us_59e61a7fe4b02a215b336fee\">Huffington Post<\/a> (reprinted according to principles of \u201cfair use\u201d)<\/p>\n<p>A black woman named Tarana Burke is the original creator of the #MeToo campaign that has recently taken over social media.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"https:\/\/www.democracynow.org\/embed\/story\/2017\/10\/17\/meet_tarana_burke_the_activist_who\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/MeToo.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"781\" height=\"541\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-11126\" srcset=\"https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/MeToo.jpg 781w, https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/MeToo-300x208.jpg 300w, https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/MeToo-768x532.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 781px) 100vw, 781px\" \/><br \/>\nTarana Burke in the Democracy Now interview<\/a><br \/>\n<\/center><\/p>\n<p>Burke, founder of youth organization Just Be Inc., created the \u201cMe Too\u201d campaign in 2007 long before hashtags even existed.\u00a0The 44-year-old told Ebony Magazine that she created the campaign as a grass-roots movement to reach sexual assault survivors in underprivileged communities.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt wasn\u2019t built to be a viral campaign or a hashtag that is here today and forgotten tomorrow,\u201d Burke told Ebony on Monday. \u201cIt was a catchphrase to be used from survivor to survivor to let folks know that they were not alone and that a movement for radical healing was happening and possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The campaign recently turned into a hashtag after actress Alyssa Milano wrote a call-out on Twitter asking followers to share their stories of sexual harassment and assault using the phrase\u00a0\u201cMe too.\u201d While Milano did not state that she created the campaign, many media outlets credited the actress for originating\u00a0the hashtag.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Burke told Ebony that it\u2019s \u201cpowerful\u201d to see the hashtag go viral. \u201cWhat\u2019s happening now is powerful,\u201d she said. \u201cAnd I salute it and the women who have disclosed but the power of using \u2018me too\u2019 has always been in the fact that it can be a conversation starter or the whole conversation \u2015 but it was us talking to us.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>(article continued in right column)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"float: right; width: 46%;\">Question related to this article:<\/div>\n<div style=\"float: right; width: 46%;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"float: right; width: 46%;\">\n<p align=\"justify\">\n<p><em><strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/?p=7599\">Protecting women and girls against violence, Is progress being made?<\/a><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>(article continued from left column)<\/p>\n<p>On Monday, Milano tweeted that she was \u201cmade aware of an earlier #MeToo movement\u201d and linked to Burke\u2019s story.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Alyssa Milano: &#8220;I was just made aware of an earlier #MeToo movement, and the origin story is equal parts heartbreaking and inspiring&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In a Tuesday morning\u00a0interview with Democracy Now, Burke discussed the origins of the \u201cMe Too\u201d movement and why it\u2019s still so relevant today. As a survivor of sexual violence herself, Burke said she used the \u201cme too\u201d phrase as a way to connect with other survivors, specifically young women of color.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201d[I was] trying to find a succinct way to show empathy,\u201d Burke said. \u201cMe too is so powerful because somebody had said it to me and it changed the trajectory of my healing process once I heard that. Me too was about reaching the places that other people wouldn\u2019t go, bringing messages and words and encouragement to survivors of sexual violence where other people wouldn\u2019t be talking about it.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Burke tweeted her thoughts about the hashtag going viral on Sunday night, writing: \u201cThe point of the work we\u2019ve done over the last decade with the \u2018me too movement\u2019 is to let women, particularly young women of color know that they are not alone \u2015 it\u2019s a movement.\u201d . . . <\/p>\n<p>The #MeToo movement highlights a common problem:\u00a0Feminist movements are often whitewashed when they\u2019re brought into mainstream conversations. Women of color are often overlooked and left out of the very conversations they create.numbers.<\/p>\n<p>As the #MeToo hashtag went viral, many people thanked Burke and tweeted their support of her movement.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Co-founder of Black Lives Matter Alicia Garza thanked Burke, tweeting: \u201cThank you @TaranaBurke for bringing us this gift of #MeToo almost 10 years ago. Still powerful today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Other Twitter users gave credit to Burke for #MeToo and asked media to stop crediting white women for the work of women of color. \u201d#MeToo was started by Tarana Burke.
