{"id":10026,"date":"2017-07-15T12:41:39","date_gmt":"2017-07-15T16:41:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/?p=10026"},"modified":"2018-01-07T12:49:27","modified_gmt":"2018-01-07T17:49:27","slug":"usa-israel-palestine-statement-by-the-mennonites-takes-a-third-way","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/?p=10026","title":{"rendered":"USA: Israel-Palestine statement by the Mennonites takes a \u2018third way\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"float: left; width: 46%;\">\n<p>. .DISARMAMENT &#038; SECURITY. ,<\/p>\n<p>An article from the <a href=\"http:\/\/mennoworld.org\/2017\/07\/06\/news\/mc-usa-delegates-pass-israel-palestine-resolution\/\">Mennonite World Review<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Mennonite Church USA delegates on July 6 overwhelmingly passed a resolution on Israel-Palestine, confessing \u201cour own complicity in this web of violence, injustice and suffering\u201d and vowing \u201cconcrete steps to address these wrongs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At the first business session of the denominational convention, the statement received 98 percent support, with 10 dissenting votes in a delegate body of about 550.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/mennonites.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/mennonites-300x201.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"201\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-10027\" srcset=\"https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/mennonites-300x201.jpg 300w, https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/mennonites.jpg 433w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nAnita Kehr, representing Western District Conference, speaks during open discussion time on the Israel-Palestine resolution. \u2014 Vada Snider for MWR<\/center><\/p>\n<p>\u201cSeeking Peace in Israel and Palestine\u201d takes what supporters call a \u201cthird way,\u201d opposing the Israeli military occupation while taking a stand against anti-Semitism and affirming the need to build stronger relationships with Jewish communities.<\/p>\n<p>In 2015, delegates tabled an earlier version of the resolution, asking that it be rewritten and brought back in two years.<\/p>\n<p>This time, delegates commended the statement as a humble call for justice that recognizes \u201cthe legacy of Jewish suffering is intertwined with the suffering of Palestinians.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI feel the resolution is a faithful response to conflict in that region,\u201d said Heidi Regier Kreider, representing Western District Conference. \u201cI believe it allows us to reach out to Jewish and Palestinian communities and be consistent in our call to be peace people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Regarding the movement known as BDS \u2014 boycott, divestment, sanctions \u2014 the resolution aims to offer a unique Mennonite position. It urges avoiding \u201cthe purchase of products associated with acts of violence or policies of military occupation.\u201d It does not call for a boycott of all Israeli goods or for academic or cultural boycotts.<\/p>\n<p>The resolution asks the financial agency Everence to convene representatives of Mennonite organizations to \u201creview investment practices for the purpose of withdrawing investments from companies that are profiting from the occupation.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>It urges all church members to review their investments in a similar way.<\/p>\n<p>(article continued in right column)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"float: right; width: 46%;\">Question related to this article:<\/div>\n<div style=\"float: right; width: 46%;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"float: right; width: 46%;\">\n<\/p>\n<p><em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/?p=7690\">Presenting the Palestinian side of the Middle East, Is it important for a culture of peace?<\/a><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/english.cpnn-world.org\/?p=11476\">How can a culture of peace be established in the Middle East?<\/a><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>(article continued from left column)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Making confessions<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201c[W]e confess and lament the ways we have supported the military occupation, which has grievously harmed and traumatized the Palestinian people and has not served the well-being and long-term security of Israelis,\u201d the resolution states.<\/p>\n<p>Specific points of confession include \u201cembracing or tolerating Zionist theology,\u201d accepting negative stereotypes of Palestinians based on \u201canti-Muslim and anti-Arab biases\u201d and contributing tax dollars to military aid to Israel.<\/p>\n<p>The resolution does not endorse either a one-state or two-state solution in Israeli-Palestine. \u201cWe hear a call from both Jews and Palestinians,\u201d it says, \u201cto have a state . . . that protects their unique cultures, civil rights, freedoms, security and dignity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Delegates overwhelmingly expressed support.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Emily Hedrick of Lima Mennonite Church in Ohio said she had been \u201clooking for a peace witness in this generation,\u201d which has not faced a military draft, \u201cand I see that in this resolution.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ryan Ahlgrim of Richmond, Va., said the resolution was already forming Mennonite Church USA in a positive way by making members intentional about not being anti-Semitic and about caring for Palestinians.<\/p>\n<p>Among concerns expressed, Tim Bentch of Souderton, Pa., felt the statement\u2019s call to end the occupation was \u201cpolitical rhetoric\u201d that hindered the ability of Israelis to hear what the statement is saying.<\/p>\n<p>Michael Crosby of Champaign-Urbana, Ill., said the statement had already opened up new inter\u00adfaith conversations in his ongoing meetings with a local imam and a rabbi.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Two endorsements<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Delegates heard endorsements of the resolution from a Jew and a Palestinian.<br \/>\nRabbi Brant Rosen, representing the Rabbinical Council of Jewish Voices for Peace, read a statement from the council noting that \u201cwithin North American Jewish communities, there is a growing desire to end our silence over Israel\u2019s oppressive occupation of Palestine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brant said that as \u201ca Jew and rabbi and a person of conscience\u201d he was deeply impressed with the resolution.<\/p>\n<p>Alex Awad, a Palestinian Christian who has served as a pastor and professor in Israel-Palestine, told of speaking at numerous Mennonite events and visiting in Mennonite homes.
